Youko and Keiki from Twelve Kingdoms, a show/series of novels not nearly appreciated enough. Drawing this I learned

a.) that I should remember how boring elaborate borders are to do *before* I talk myself into them, and

b.) that dark skin, such as Youko has, is such a pain in the arse that I ought not to draw characters possessing it.

The drawing is largely colored pencil, of course, but the foliage is guache. Why, you ask? Because for patchy chinese-ink-painting-esque trees like this, any other way lies madness. There are people who could color the branches and the sky and the leaves around each other. I am not such a person.

I really like this one, and for once the posed-portrait appearance of my figures bothers me not a whit; I can only suppose I consider it not out of character for these two.
