Late that night, after the tragedy in the gorge and Scar’s ascension, Sarabi stood watching the sky. As the suffocating feeling of despair whelmed up inside her, she felt a gentle touch. Zazu placed his wing on her shoulder, in an attempt to provide her with a tiny bit of comfort, and with his gesture, Sarabi spoke aloud the question she had been repeating in her mind.“Mufasa once told me that the great kings of the past watch over us from the stars. My little Simba will never be king now – is that why there is only one new star?”
Zazu, the one who had spent the most time with her mate and son, didn’t have an answer.

Been dealing with a lot lately. Life has a way of kicking me when I'm down. I've had this sketch for a while, but decided to finish it off today. Guess it sort of describes how life feels right now for me. Sarabi felt like she had nothing left and was in complete despair. Little did she know, Simba was alive and well and would one day come back to save them all, become king and 'earn his star'. It reminded me that when things seem bad, there is good around the corner, you just have to make it there.
Night colors and drawing Zazu are both really hard for me, so this turned out fairly crappy.

My first thought would be that she should actually get a sense of hope from not seeing Simba's star, because it is a sign that he could still be alive. But then, legend has it that only kings (and queens?) get a new star in the sky when they die, but Simba was just a prince. Depends on how you look at it I guess.
Good job for drawing Sarabi, btw. She's such an underrated character.

You've got a good point there, I love your way of thinking! I was thinking she could have been going with the 'worst case scenario', which some people often do when negative things happen. I admit, sometimes I think like that as well, because if you think the worst thing, everything else is better, right?

I know, I guess it would be hard for her to think straight. She'd probably still be in shock at this point.
Here's something I forgot to mention last time. I know it's easier said than done, but when life kicks you while you're down, just get up and kick it back.

Yes, I think that's a good point too. Shock is way more serious than people often think and can affect individuals in so many different ways.

Yay, thanks! And I'm pretty sure that fur texture you see is just the film grain I slapped on there at the end to make it more like a screen shot, but oh well!
I'm actually sort of impressed with how this turned out, since I haven't drawn anything since the last picture I uploaded a couple months back. I missed drawing!

Lol, well thanks. I think its something along the lines of Filter > Artistic > Film grain and then just play with the settings until it looks film grainy...or real fur textury..

Aww, that's a beautiful picture! Although it's sad, the comfort shown is so strong in it. I do hope you'll find enough comfort to make you strong until things get better. And they will!
