Thanks! No, I'm unfortunately bad about finishing some of them.  Things happen and I lose interest, but I do want to get back to it soon.  Once I finish the current line of statues I'll get back to the Darkseid and 1/4-1/5 scale things.

Thanks, Shan!  Good to hear!  I just wish it weren't so heavy.  The sculpt is pulling away from itself to a degree.  I'll have to dedicate some time to a wax transfer on some of it.

Sculpting can be quite bothersome when things like that happen,
As much as I enjoy sculpting I still find making wire armatures to be annoying,
the process can be frustrating when you plan on sculpting something complicated and fiddly
and requires a lot of thin bits, or simply needs extra support... sometimes I really don't miss sculpting, drawing is so much simpler.

I hear ya...the not so quick fix is wax.  No armatures, but much slower to work with, though I still love sculpting

I hear ya, man.  It's tough to devote that kind of time to something just to have it break or the armature not quite work out.

Thanks, Tim.  Yeah, you'll have to look him up.  He's part of the U-FOES.  I really liked how Keown drew him back in the day.  I sculpted this a while ago...I haven't been focused on in it, but I thought this pic looked cool.  I doubt I'll post it anywhere, but here and possibly the new shiflett forum.

yep, I looked him up on Wiki and the U Foes too. Like the art and character design. Liked the U Foes too, specially Dreadnought. Great job so far on him Chris, hope you get to finish him.

I'm a member of the Shifflett's forum but never posted there. Noted the coiled wire on Ironclads' base. Great armature design for strength I'm finding.

Thanks, bud!  I hope I finish him too lol...There's a lot of cracking issues bc of the weight.  The armature is pretty sturdy, but I guess there needed to be more support around the waist to keep the weight off the legs.  It's not baked, so it may not be too hard to fix.  It's a fairly old sculpt.  I've just never shown it.

aww, shame Chris. To lose all that effort due to the clay. sucks really. I have picked up my Warbird from last year in chavant hard and working on finishing it. A lick of a flame and the clay is ready to be re-worked.
I guess sculpey is great for some folks so I hope it works out for you. Guess you could bake and have him waxed like the Hulk in future.

Yeah and that's why I want to drift from clay.  I can surely fix and cast things if I have to.  Good luck with Warbird...at least its chavant!  I'm still working on smoothing and sanding the Hulk.  I got my old wax pen working by cutting it open and connecting the wires, but it isn't consistent.

Well hopefully your new pen will arrive then it will be easier on you Chris. I was using mine on the chavant. works well. What will you drift too Chris?

Hang in there with the Hulk. finessing can be tedious for sure but worth it. Maybe give chavant a go next eh? lol.

i'll pop some pics up later.

I'll probably start using monster clay for the body or chavant, if I like it and continue using castilene for the hands and head...or maybe just all castilene.

Tim-Osullivan In reply to sup3rs3d3d [2014-04-24 08:30:30 +0000 UTC]

Cool. MC and Chavant are very good  clays Chris. I started a new piece at 5 pm yesterday in Monster Clay. I noted that it stays completely fresh like a normal wax even after a year. The harder chavant can dry out a touch but you can remelt and refresh it or cos it's so cheap, just get another block.

The chavant that never dies is the Beau Touche. So waxy that it perks up in your hand. Castilene is ace for heads and such so we're on the same page there.

Nice!  Look forward to seeing it and speaking of monster clay, I work on that eastwood head I transferred to it.  I corrected the chin that had been smashed and start back on the nose. I like the material for the most part, but it gets too soft while working.  I have to constantly freeze it.  I'm not even sure if it would survive shipping it in the summer months.

Tim-Osullivan In reply to sup3rs3d3d [2014-04-24 23:39:22 +0000 UTC]

ah, cool, I liked that Eastwood head Chris.  MC is very soft when new. Add a cup or more of paraffin wax pellets and it'll toughen up buddy. That's what I did, that and adding some CX5!

give Chavant hrd a shot. Even I hot weather it didn't melt or wilt last year, just sweated a little.

Where do you get your parafiin pellets from?  I'll have to try that...Also, cx5 mixes with MC well?  I would've thought it would separate, but if you say it works I've got some cx5 I could mix.  Have you ever tried that fuse wax or whatever the red wax is that Erick uses?  He's says its like castilene, but without the negatives...sounds more like a marketing hype rather than fact...I heard how wonderful cx5 was, but when I got it I didn't really care for it.  It's too brittle and the cooling time is too quick to really move it around like castilene.  I was once holding a 1/4 solid cx5 head firmly in my hand and working out some details and had the whole thing bust in half.  It crack right down the center...insanity!  I'm not the hulk or anything, so it's not like I have a death grip on it or something.

I get my pellets from Tiranti over here but I guess I can find em cheaper. The waxes mix perfectly ; I stir until it stiffens like hot taffy. The allow to cool. You'll be fine Chris. Just keep testing it as you mix till it's what you are lookin for. I model a boot or leg usually and run it under cold water to see how hard it will end up; if it's crap, then back in the pot and add more waxes.

Ah , the red wax, yeah, I remember him saying about that on his videos. Cant remember the name but no, not tried any. Again, shipping, tax and import kill that, same as for CX5. I'd like to try the new softer version too but will have to wait.
I reckon I'm happy with the Hard Chavant / Monster Clay and wax parts like we mentioned.

Yeah, the brittle issue was a pain but I do like CX5, but like you, I prefer to be able to go with the flow and energy when sculpting so clay is faster where as wax slows to a pace that's kinda dull. Reckon it's best for casting or making Heads, hands etc.  Could you imagine having to re do Ironclad in just wax Chris?! hell no for me!!  Tried a 1/4 figure and gave up. lol.

hmm I'll have to try doing some mixes.  I'll have to order some stuff someday, though I'm about tired of buying materials and tools right now lol...I need to set money aside for silicone and that's a big hell no for a 1/4 in wax unless it was finished and I just needed to sand smooth it or fix an area here and there.

OH... I know that feeling Chris. Endless expense....! That's partly why I bought Z Brush and occasionally thought of quitting ( i kinda miss figure painting at times) but in the end, I faced facts and accepted that it's an 'Outlay' hobby. Will keep eating money!. Specially silicone but you can offset some costs by using re-usable clays like Chavant or MC.

I was actually thinking something similar about silicone this morning; I wondered if I'd be best erved by buying a large amount and some ancillaries so I could also make silicone putty from stock, rather than buying both separately I wonder if that would make budgetary sense?. hmmm...

Still the cheapest is what you have here though in sculpey. Just wish we didn't have to fret the stuff come baking time. I got a pack and a half to use up. Best use it before it goes off. Luckily it cost me nothing  !

Yeah, I hear ya.  I wish there were more stores with sculpting sections and supplies in my area.  There's not a whole lot to choose from or try out, so we end up taking more risks and paying more bc we have to constantly order things to find what works best.

I'm sure a large amount of silicone would be pretty expensive, but if you've got the money and plan on using it, it's likely cheaper than buying smaller amounts.

Yeah, same situation for me Chris. Not much around and all the cools stuff seems to be in the USA! At least the Chavant is cheap so I can afford that.Still noodling the silicone. I'd like to mold and paint stuff but am also conscious of space limits. Better I suppose to keep practicing in the Chavant and hopefully get a gig some day.... ..then again I might win the Lotto! hah! ......

How's your stuff going then bud?  Bout time you showed the World your wax Hulk, rough or not, it'll wet some panties!! lol.

Shipping and pricing is probably considerably cheaper here in the States, but it seems I've still got to order everything, which mean it's all still a pricey gamble.  Also, I don't live near any sort of art scene.  I guess it could be worse...but it could be better too! lol

I've been working more on the eastwood head this past week since I had to work.  I may start back up on the hulk today or tomorrow.  Maybe post some updates this week.  I'm mostly trying to get it to look like it did before with some small corrections, so I'm not sure people would really care or notice. lol..."wet some panties" LOL good one!

Shipping here is ok. No scene here for me either really Chris. It's a solitary pastime I think.

Good to know you are busy. I like that Eastwood head. Very good likeness I thought.  I think a pic of the transfer would actually wet some appetites. No-one has seen Hulk for like a year.
