Okay, because I remember going to an amusement park with a giraffe that looked exactly like that on the merry-go-round. I know because I rode on it. One leg was cracked a little and it sort of wobbled a bit under my weight, but it was a giraffe and God help me I WAS GOING TO RIDE IT.
I don't get why they don't have the cool animals go up and down, too. Sure, horses are cool and all, but they aren't lions or zebras.

I noticed on some just a couple move (usually b/c I accidentally chose the non-moving horse). I suspect this has something to do with stability and mechanics. I really out to go to the nearby Carousel museum and find out!

Some carousels have a dragon. I think you might be right, but the dragon can afford to be horse shaped. It might also have something to do with finding replacement parts.
