I totally agree with you there! The first anime sticks with you and doesn't go away no matter what. It's funny how that works.
I took a look at both versions, and I'll say this is a good redraw!
The anatomy here is more controlled, and the abs are more condensed (people tend to space this area apart too wide and looks a bit strange)
The shadows behind the wings are more pronounced, and make the wings have dense mass.
The "chip lines" add a nice touch to the work, and add a nice homage to his specialty as a tech engineer.
Lastly, yes, he's one DAMN fine tough man!
