Description Aww. I think this idea's been floating about in my head for a bit.. it and Houndpile inspired each other methinks. Anyway my dad asked me to do a canvas with some of my cartoon dogs on it before I left, and this came out when I was brainstorming for ideas. I've said I like to display the 'couch potato' side of these dogs rather than the '40-mph' side as so many people portray the latter.. so here we have the three sizes, a grey, whipp and IG, asleep in a pile on some bed or other. It's my first painting in acrylics in a long time, and I love how it came out. I'm too lazy to go into too much detail but I do like the way I paint. Spontaneity was always something I value in my art

My dad said I should make them more toony.. but I guess my dogstyle changed quite a bit over the past half a year. They don't really look so Disney-esque or All Dogs Go To Heaven-ish anymore.. and I'm quite happy with them now really. Sort of somewhere between toony and realistic. Works fine for me

Acrylic on canvas. I love real media again.

thank you so much! it's been a long time since I've done a proper painting, I guess I just love my pencils way too much. I may try though since you mention it. thanks again!

^_^= You're welcome! I think that'd be awesome~. Though I've always stuck to traditional media such as colored pencils, myself, heh. But I'm sure whatever you create is going to turn out great -- Like I said on your front page comments, I love your art and style! Aspiring animator? ;- )

Pencils and coloured pencils are my loves. Paint has always frightened me, but acrylics and I have learned to get along. and I'm by no means infallible - after all I only upload the stuff that I am happy with to my gallery. xDDD my watercolours are a horror. but I do want to give it another shot.

yup! in my third year right now, BFA Traditional Animation course.

thank you so much for your kind comments.

he he, well at least you've had experience with other media. I'm yet to step out of my safe zone.

That's great! You've definitely got an animator's style. To be honest, I used to want to be an animator all through high school and beginning of college, but I came to realize art was only a hobby for me. I do it purely for fun (I'm no Kinkade LoL). I'm an aspiring vet tech. ;-3

good to know. xD and hey, I'm no background painter myself! I'm more interested in making things move than making them all prettified. xD

funny, I used to want to be a vet! then I volunteered at an office and realised it wasn't for me. I remember thinking, "if I'm going to be this busy... *GASP* I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO DRAW AGAIN!!" that might have been when I knew. xD I will still always have animals though. I can't imagine my life without them. I am going nuts dogless in college!

LoL! x-P Yeah, it's not for everyone, but the idea of helping out animals would be a fulfilled life for me. I'm right there with you -- I couldn't imagine life without 'em! Especially man's best friend. Do you have your own dog?

swift-whippet In reply to KitchenWhippet [2008-02-14 20:42:32 +0000 UTC]

that would have been what fueled me too, except that I equally cannot imagine a life for me without drawing. it's something I've always done and something I believe I always will do. I tend to 'eh' at the man's best friend label. dogs certainly have many merits, but cats, horses and other critters certainly share equally precious bonds with many people I know! I think a lot depends on the person that you are. there is a reason my personal character is a whippet.

many people believe I have whippets because they're my favourite breed, but I have an Italian Greyhound - my very close second-favourite, and mainly because of my Bella. she's twelve years old and the sweetest thing. I miss her terribly when I'm away. How about yourself?

KitchenWhippet In reply to swift-whippet [2008-02-14 23:41:09 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, I don't exactly put that "label" on dogs, just threw it in. ^ ^; But I whole-heartily agree with you that many different creatures can share just as strong bonds. I've seen on Animal Planet a cat saving its owner from a fire by waking them up instead of just jumping out the open window! They really have their own souls. :- )

Ohh you have an IG? ^__^ <3 They are so precious! I used to have one. Right now I don't have a dog, BUT this coming March I am actually getting a whippet! :-D She's coming from a breeder who's done it for over 40 years. I've visited her a few times and she is the most gorgeous thing~. Her show name is Star Ballerina, but "Balley" is easier. :- )

Do you happen to have any photos of your Bella? <3

xD sorry about that, I tend to pick up on things like that. but yes, definitely. I really think it's a beautiful thing when there is a deep and true bond between a human and an animal. <3

that is awesome that you're getting a whippet! she sounds lovely, I love the fact that whippet breeders are generally reputable and friendly folks, it's resulted in a very healthy breed. I can't wait to be able to have one of my own, but I'd like to know that I'd be able to support myself as well as any other dogs. which is going to be a good few years from now, but oh well. o_.;

as a matter of fact, I do! <3 [link]

KitchenWhippet In reply to swift-whippet [2008-02-17 00:59:28 +0000 UTC]

he he, yeah I can't wait. I'll definitely post some pictures up of her on dA. And you know what, I did notice that whippet breeders are pretty nice people. The lady Balley is coming from is so sweet, and all the other whippets she's bred are beautiful and healthy. Believe me though, I was picky on where to find a whippet in the beginning -- You need to make sure the person breeds them RIGHT (no inter-breeding or the like).

OH MY GOODNESS, what a sweet baby Bella!! She is absolutely darling! She's 12, you said? She looks very good for her age, I mean a lot of iggies go blind and/or loose their teeth when they get old. How is she doing?

swift-whippet In reply to KitchenWhippet [2008-02-17 02:42:29 +0000 UTC]

that is what I've noticed too! I've been hanging out on the WhippetLovers forum for over a year already and the whippet people just seem absolutely sweet and helpful, and responsible and devoted to their dogs to boot! well, I have heard that some people do line breeding and it can be a good thing if used for the right purpose and not as a way to cut corners. I don't like the idea of too much of it myself, but reputable, caring breeders still do it for good reason.

well granted those pictures were taken a year or two ago, but she hasn't really changed since then. she is an AMAZINGLY healthy dog, and I am only starting to realise this now that she is this age. she's never been ill in her life, and really the only things we've had to take her to the vet for have been her booster shots, her puppy checkups, and the one time that she broke her leg falling into a ditch at top speed (she was so focused on chasing me she didn't see it. typical). even now, though she's stopped being active and high strung and mellowed out, and she's showing some slight signs of slowing down, she's still in very good health. I think it's a credit to the people that bred her. I still remember going to visit them and their dogs... I was only ten at the time but I was so enthralled. they sold me on IGs for life. <3

Well, this is what you see dogs (and cats, for that matter) doing most of their days- sleeping and being lazy little loveables I think it has a pretty good balance between toon and realism- and its a lot harder to do a toon style with acrylic paints!

Yeah, but it's the nickname of the greyhound, the 40mph couch potato, and the same rings true for other sighthounds as well since sighthounds are my muses after all, I just had to do this.

Haha, thanks! It was tricky a bit, but I think I managed ^^ Even so, that was only the beginnings of my present-day dog style. which I'm quite happy with

YAY! Real media! *loves it* You have such a nice, soft way of painting and the cool colors give it a dreamy feeling. It's pleasant to look at and makes the viewer feel relaxed. There are no sharp edges so it feels peaceful and calm and happy. Sleeping hounds are perfect for all that. Plus they don't look too toony. I think if they were any toonier it would sort of ruin the effect it has. This is something I'd hang in my room :3
