If this had the retro-esque front clip of the S197 or S302, it'd be literally perfect. That gunmetal gray is an excellent color for an all-business muscle car. Damn shame about the front clip, because the rest of the 2015+ Mustangs are perfect. It's already got some '71-'73 going on with the coupe's long, rectangular rear glass area. And it's got the lovely triple rectangle tails on the blacked out panel! Gee Ford, I didn't know the Fusion counted a previous Mustang to take inspiration from! At least the Foxes, the SN-95s, and the New Edges had uniquely shaped front clips with cues that weren't featured on any other car in Ford's lineup at the time; if you're going to depart from the retro, do so in a manner that's creative, not derivative!Β

Also, convertible. Blecccccccccccccccch. More weight plus less torsional rigidity plus more wind noise equals fail.

This car is very much a retro Mustang:

Granted, I prefer the original inspiration to the modern interpretation but the retro is there.

Bu-bu-bu the headlights! They're literally ripped off the Fusion. I should've been more specific when I bashed the front clip.... I just get emotional and silly when seeing a design that's not cohesive. I remember how you highlighted design cues from the II and how they integrated well. There's no disputing that they had II inspiration. But they should've done it all the way. Round headlights, liftback rear, and so on. Because the headlights on it now are goofy and out of place. Plus the trunk is pathetically tiny. It's small by even by sports car standards. Why hurt aesthetics and practicality? Not like there's any huge fuel economy or downforce penalty to either of these II features. What's more, there's a definite business case for a full-blown II; it happily shattered previous sales records and was extremely profitable.

You know how much I love the II, so you think I'd be happy that this is a retro II.Β  But in all honesty I can't stand the look of the new Mustang.Β  And it's that front fascia, definitely.Β  Jeff Koch said it best in the most recent issue of Hemmings.Β  He reviewed the new Shelby and praised the front fascia for improving the look of the sixth-generation Mustang, of which the standard models look like a muscle car melted.

Pretty amazing how easy it was for the GT-350 to mostly throw off the yoke of poor frontal aesthetics. All they did was add functional mesh/open up the grille for ducting, put amber bezels for the turn signals/lower foglights, and add a nice angled strake on the top part of the grille, to help direct air into the cooling ducts.

Simple, practical changes leading to better looks? Say it ain't so!
