Soooo way back in September I saw a production of Into the Woods with steampunk costumes (very very cool btw) and I thought “Oh man! I could do that with Starship!” So after many months, I’ve finally done it, and here is the first installment of what I like to call Steamship.

Coincidentally, this drawing contains the hardest costume and the easiest costume that I designed, Bug's being the hardest because of his vest. I was stumped trying to figure out how to steampunk-ify it, because it's so shiny and futuristic, whereas steampunk fashion has more of a grittier, vintage-look to it. However the task became easier when I was researching robotic steampunk stuff for another character and thought 'Hmm, what if I made Bug's vest like metal armor?' I did so to serve two purposes: 1) To make his uniform uniquely different from the other rangers (as Specs points out, it is a different make and model than the ones in current circulation), and 2) To create a sort of reference to his life as a bug (In my Steamship-headcanon, the bugs have metallic exoskeletons, like armor). I rusted it to show its age. I also had trouble with his infamous headband, until the obvious decision to give him a top hat hit me in the face.

On the flip side, the easiest costume to design by far was February's, because I can put in all the floofy frills and bustles I want and IT WORKS. HUZZAH. Looking back, it's probably not very practical to go traipsing about an alien planet in a giant bustle and train, but there are things we have to sacrifice for the sake of fashion, mind you.

I do kind of wish these two had kissed when he was a human. I imagine Bug would be simultaneously confused and deliriously happy. ADORABLE.
