Description Whispers in the Dark
a Great Mouse Detective fanfictionChapter 07 | It couldn't be ...

the chapters: prologue | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 | 14 ... (to be continued)

summary: AU - None believed that the hate-filled words of a little girl could still live on after more then 200 years, but when strange events start occurring in London the city's only hope of survival lies with one mouse ... and a rat?

TA-DA! Yes, chapter 7 is now up and running! Must be my favorite one to write up to date! And I must say that even though I somehow forgot to draw Basil's trousers and I have this odd feeling that that lamp looks a bit too "in the foreground", I made a pretty detailed bg for once - and I is downright proud of it! Also, I drew my first fireplace! - complete with some random famous mouse bust on top.

Now, just as the chapter in question, this little things -should- be filled with clues. (We all know how most things tend to hide in shadows, no? ) Hope this one is up to your expectations

And no worries - you'll all see Ratigan in the next one (can't afford to keep the ra- ... mouse out of the spotlight for too long, right? )

p.s. I'm really starting to like that scarf :3

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Vision: There is quite a lot of things going on in this room that is beyond simply looking at it directly. The viewer is pulled deep into its small realm of many objects that give off a bit of clutter and disarray. This is a turning point, a climatic moment if you will, happening in the story, brought to life in much vividness. 5.0

Originality: This is a unique scene of Basil gathering clues and trying to solve a mystery within Ratigan's personal chambers. Looking up at the painting is one big clue alone. Read the story to find out more. 5.0

Technique: The detail on the furniture, the fireplace, the bust of a famous mouse, the broken glass and other objects were all drawn brilliantly along with their effects of shadows and lights casting off of them. Basil is always drawn perfectly, looking especially great here with her eyes turned upward. 5.0

Impact: I'm getting a lot of eerie silence, uneasiness and a twinge of fear in this picture. The fear is brought on when knowing Basil should not be lingering in Ratigan's chambers and the idea of getting caught brings on a discomfort to the scene. The fireplace would seem to offer warmth in a good way, but knowing this room is off limits, it can only provide illumination for Basil to see more unfolding secrets. 5.0

Basil (or Sherri as I refer to his female counterpart) actually looks very feminine and delicate here. I love how she's looking upwards and I would love to have that scarf! Love your story and all it's fabulousness.

Thank you all so much! I actually feel particularly bad for not updating the story for so long. Apparently I underestimated the consequences of a higher education. I still mourn the lack of sleep sometimes...

"Gonna sneeze, gonna sneeze, Gonna sneeze!" is what I imagine Basil thinking right there and since she'll be sneaking about like a ninja with arthritis that wouldn't be good now would it?

Anyways I either see half of an octopus, or it's da claws of a very, very angry doorknob.

I didn't know Mr. Flangerbanger was so fanous to get a bust made out of him. Granted that the man is a genius, but still...

Basil in a scarf has to be one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Honestly. Fabulous chapter, and this illustration is rather the best so far, awesome stuff.

This seems like a quite interesting concept.

Tye picture itself is great, dark colours give an ominous presence to an unknown force. The expression in the face puzzled and surprised and the details such as the mouse bust and the broken glass tools complete the scene.

Excellent.

Old school is most definitely my kind of school - because "old school" is actually school and has a few laws I actually can FOLLOW! (without actually following them XD )

I just figured it out! "It couldn't be..." Basil staring upward, I think I know what she means, but I'll keep quiet, I promise. In the meantime...

Oh, sorry, this is so lovely and the background is beyond stunning! Like many others have said, I'll chime in as well of loving Basil's scarf. Very nice shade of green! You did a wonderful job on the fireplace, too. And that bust, excellent work there!

Am I seeing words under the red letters of "Dark" or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

sycamoreleaf In reply to Brinatello [2010-04-16 10:20:01 +0000 UTC]

We'll just wait and see I can be evil at times >:3

Hehehe, everybody seems to like the scarf Even I like! (actually ... I WANT IT!!!) And I'm actually thinking of bringing more background to my next ones (because I actually love making them! ) Might take a little longer, but I am getting faster ...

No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you Whenever I make a "title" or something along the lines I have a un-natural tenancy to combine many, many fonts AND to add less-noticeable words from the title around the title (makes any sense? ) - although for this one, I also wanted to have that the "whisper" sensation in it

Brinatello In reply to sycamoreleaf [2010-04-16 18:12:50 +0000 UTC]

I'll give a hint of what I think it is: something you revealed earlier in art form on here, the hint made me spark with interest in wondering if it's the same connection. Betting on 'yes' it made me pop up excitedly.

Oh, I wish I had your enthusiasm with making backgrounds. They're my worse enemy when I'm never sure how to go about with them. A long time ago (in a galaxy far far away), backgrounds were my specialty. I'm talking elementary school years (late eighties). I loved them more than drawing the subjects. Now, it's the other way around. Go figure, right?

Love your thinking on the text. A whisper on the text, that's awesome.

Well, I am definitely hooked!

(And actually, I DO have an idea- I'm in the same boat with a couple of friends over something I'm writing at the moment.)

I was so 'into' your story that for some time this morning, after I read it, it lingered in my thoughts, and I found my imagination/heart captivated by it.

Not too many fanfictions I've read have had THAT much of an effect on me.

So far, I have to say that this illustration is my new favourite. I can't really tell you why. I love the atmosphere and the composition of it. (squints) Who's the statute?

sycamoreleaf In reply to tranimation-art [2010-04-15 19:25:38 +0000 UTC]

VERY happy to know so (I was heavily inspired by the West Wing scene in Disney's Beauty and the Beast)

To be honest, I am not compleately sure. I did say "random famous mouse", so it could be anyone, but I was thinking of Nietzsche when I made it and since Ratigan's a "fan" - you can think of the guy as the mouse version of the German But - now that I look at it ... it looks a bit like Hiram Flaversham ... bizarre ...

I just felt that a bust would go well there
