I'd probably add something purple (splashes, or simple monochrome scenery maybe?) both calm and warm tones. Not too strong or dark tones.

Haha, I was actually going to suggest the same thing, kind of surrounding the dog, not getting too close, so as to ensure the dog is SAFE. :3

for a bg, you could do a splotchy colour wash? or something... I'm terrible at explaining things but.... splats of colour and stuff
