They're doing the same thing at the hospital my mother's worked at for 30 years. They keep trying to 'buy her out' so they can hire younger nurses at less pay, who aren't unionized. They run the hospital like a business and worry more about money than patient care.

Have a look at this: www.thomasgood.com/?page_id=43…
Dr. Kernberg is brilliant and talks at length about the (too often) mutually exclusive goals of quality care and increased profits.

Thanks! I've worked in health care for the last 30 years (and Mom is a retired nurse) so this is an issue I care about...

I was a case worker (entitlements, then psychiatry) but for the last 20 years I've been writing (Free Open Source) software: clinical charting apps, web based. Here is an article I wrote for Psychiatric Services (the APA journal) back in 2005: ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/fu…

I think no matter where you are in the world staffing to patient ratios are always an issue. There have been protests here in Australia as well over the past few years because of it

“We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everyone has to earn a living. It is a fact that 1 in 10,000 of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian-Darwinian theory, he must justify his right to exist. So we have inspectors of inspectors and people making instruments for inspectors to inspect inspectors. The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them about earning a living.” ~ Richard Buckminster Fuller ...   Lack of quality healthcare professionals is due to the lack of opportunity and human rights... such as self-determination. Many children have grown up who'd have been naturally inclined towards healthcare but were coerced otherwise and/or denied basic human rights such as the RIGHT to a FREE education, healthy thriving community participation that includes ALL of the animals, plants, fungi, minerals and beyond and encourages confidence and subsistence/healing/responsibility and compassion, as well as the right of mobility... and many other basic rights denied... Such as the right to a livable future, clean air to breath, water to drink and healthy soil to cultivate for ourselves in the near future and our grandchildren's grandchildren seven gens down the line...  "“Other Westerners and I are struck by the emotional security, self-confidence, curiosity, and autonomy of members of small-scale societies, not only as adults but already as children. We see that people in small-scale societies spend far more time talking to each other than we do, and they spend no time at all on passive entertainment supplied by outsiders, such as television, videogames, and books. We are struck by the precocious development of social skills in their children. These are qualities that most of us admire, and would like to see in our own children, but we discourage development of those qualities by ranking and grading our children and constantly telling them what to do.”-www.madinamerica.com/2013/08/s…www.fifthestate.org/archive/39… ~!~ deepgreenresistance.org/en/ ~!~
