Retreat.

That was not a word any Space Marine was familiar with, but the metal demons had driven them to it. They had erupted from the ground, swarmed the cities, slaughtered anyone who had come across them. Even the Ultramarines, called in as a last ditch effort, could not hope to stem the silver tide. The few survivors fled, knowing the planet was lost.

Magnus was one of those survivors. He was old, nearly six centuries - the walking coffin had helped him through the last two. He had only known retreat four times in his service, and has not eager to know it again. But, his Battle-Brothers were near death, and he would not have their blood on his claws. After what had felt like hours running through the city streets like frightened rats, they had finally come across a tunnel to a space port, one with a Storm Raven waiting for them, praise the Emperor.

And that was when Magnus saw it.

The very machine that had preserved his life would now end it. The tunnel was was wide, easily able to fit his still-whole Brothers, but not him. Worse still, the damned relentless machines were closing in, and his brothers were slowed down after one had taken a shot to the knee.

He knew what he must do.

He turned to face them, gun barrels spinning and promethium flowing. He begun a prayer, a short, simple one that had always been his favorite. "Only in Death..."

His Duty would end soon

He would see his Emperor.

And he would bring an offering.
