I noticed you have the same camera as me
do you find it can sometimes be difficult 
to get bird shots? I have to take about 20
shots of the same bird and hope i get a 
good one!

Yes, it is a problem, it has no manual setting...  
I use sometime auto mode with macro and birds mode, for a quick switching between shoot of birds and shoot of insect or butterflies..
Better take a more photos for after select the best photos. The camera need a few first photos for better focusing.
It's good focus nearest big things, as a big branch... Or focus on maximal zoom, when is bird in whole display and next a little zoom out.
