Final piece of 2022!Another continuation of the trend of associating each of my characters with a specific plant.
For Nijiko I went with irises, mostly because of the word play
Nijiko means "Child of the Rainbow" and he was given the name because of his mismatched irises. Additionally, Iris is the goddes of the rainbow in the Greek pantheon.
I decided to try painting with gouache again, and though I am mostly pleased with the result, it takes so, SO much longer than I'm used to with watercolours that I think I'll reserve it for special occasions, or use it in conjunction with watercolours.
In the end I did the base piece in gouache and then went in with watercolour pencils to refine and clean up the details.
