This is a beautiful image, what a great capture. I would, however, suggest that you tweak the contrast just a little bit, as the shadows and highlights are a little washed out. An auto-Curves adjustment in Photoshop would really make it pop, give it a try!

Water drops is not what I have in mind - theck that fluff growing on it.

Why does everyone have to hate on a hairy back?

Seriously though, awesome shot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TurboFerret In reply to Guardfather [2011-05-16 19:47:11 +0000 UTC]

Lol, naa - what I thought was that the fluff on the hairy back is The parasitic fungus that has infected the dragonfly. And I have nothing against that Or hairy backs

Guardfather In reply to TurboFerret [2011-05-17 04:21:50 +0000 UTC]

I was just joking. But that is interesting. I hadn't considered that the hairs might actually be fungal structures.

Umf, sometimes they are but this is probably not the case

sledgeviper In reply to TurboFerret [2011-05-17 02:20:49 +0000 UTC]

it's definitely water, i can assure you. this is a common thing to see with this genre of photography.

as for what your referring to, those are hairs that grow out from the insect. MANY many many, insects grow out little follicles of hair, not doubt for the same reasons we do, but sometimes it can serve another purpose, like collecting pollen (like bees,) sensing electrical vibrations, and who knows what else.

If your new to fungi on insects, i'd check out the Cordyceps fungus on youtube. here's a hint: grab some pop-corn and enjoy! it's WILD!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TurboFerret In reply to sledgeviper [2011-05-17 08:38:08 +0000 UTC]

Cordyceps was what I was referring to, and I have had a 'lucky' encounter with a fungus-infected dragonfly . However this indeed looks more like hairs on the back of the insect rather than fungal infection.
