This was my costume for Anime Boston 2011-- a steampunk-themed kimono! It's constructed in multiple layers to look like five layers of robes, and I stencilled the top layer in gold and copper ink with hand-cut gear stencils.The corset is a regular corset that I added a layer of craft foam to, sealed and coated with Rub-n-Buff for a metallic look, and I attached gears to the front to continue the theme.
The hair (fake ponytail) has two ornaments made of clock hands, plus a kanzashi-style ornament I made entirely out of gears. The fan is just a regular paper fan I painted gold so it would match.
All in all, it turned out looking great!

I hate to copy but I love this idea so so much! Could you please tell me what fabrics you used and what kind of kimono pattern. Gold and copper ink?! Wow would have never thought of that... also hand cut gear stencils. You really are a goddess. I would love to make this in green, tea stained cream/ivory, and brown. <3 Also if you could let me in on how much this cost you to make that would be wonderfull, along with how to do the stenciling with the ink. Wow! This is stunning! I'd admired this picture on the Steampunk Empire, and I'm really excited to find it here. The colors look perfect together, and I love how tastefully you have used the gear designs. The shape is just perfect, I'd never seen a steampunk kimono before, and I think the use of the corset is brilliant. Just, wow!
