Description This is part of a huge promotional package we have to do for our Thesis Films this year.
This is the Poster for my film. The postcard will be a screen-cap form the final, polished film- if it ever gets done with all these redundant distractions.

It looks like a nice poster. Good luck with your film I hope you complete it soon: I had the same problem finishing mine - it took six years but i got there eventually!

Eagle's body came out beautifully; the way the morning sun highlights his outline his gorgeous! I also noticed the three killer whales beneath Raven's beak...*secretly wonders if I'm the only one to notice them?* Anyways, I'm especially loving Wolf because the wolf is my totem. You just made him/her look SO cute!!

Hello!
I really appreciate you comment, however I have to correct you on one thing; you do not have a β€œtotem”.
β€œTotem” or more properly pronounced β€œDodem” with a hard β€œd” is the ANishinabe[k] worked for β€œClan. The Anishinabe are a Nation of First Nations that live in the Great Lakes and Western Ontario territories that belong to the Algonquin Language group. The β€œTotems” are in fact families- and the use of an animal symbol was in order to convey a sort of β€œlast name”. This system was situated in order to maintain and track familial heritage- this meant, someone form the Bear Clan could not marry someone from any the Bear clan, but COULD marry anyone from any other clan in the specific Nation. This system was one that is seen in nearly all the North American cultural groups- with variation on the grouping, and sub grouping of families.
The term β€œTotem” was learned by the colonials when they arrived on this land, and they- being Christian and very paranoid of anything β€œpagan” or β€œanti Christian”- misinterpreted this term as something of a β€œNew Age” concept to mean that someone has a β€œGuardian Spirit Animal” and some nonsense. This belief is NOT an aboriginal one, nor do many of the Aboriginal culture believe in it. To go around stated you have a β€œTotem of a Wolf” is offensive to many of the cultures as you are claiming to be related by blood to a specific family in the community when you do not. It also is a bad stereotype that is perpetuated by colonials that is very ClichΓ©. Please do not use the word β€œtotem” as it doesn’t mean what you think it means, and could lead to a bad situation if you even happen upon someone who is Anishinabeh and very sensitive to it.

No problem- no harm done and was not offended. I/we realize that a lot of people don't know this information, so I'm just happy that I can explain to people that don't know.

Yes, feel free to link to it! I would thank you deeply for doing so. Anything to get people watching it! I thank you for your humbling comments.

You be humble, I'll boast for you, haha! I posted a journal for my DA buddies to see. I hope it generates some traffic for you ^_^

You really did a great job and deserve all the praise. I love hand drawn animation and this is wonderful.

I am a self taught artist and this really makes me want to go to school and see what i could do with the right kind of fundamentals put in place. At 28, i am a little old for traditional school but maybe someday soon i'll give it shot.

You will be surprised- we get people as old as 40 at Sheridan. There isn't an "age" where you stop learning- or in my personal opinion- should stop learning! If you have what it takes, just pursue it!

You are very right. In fact, I work in the Human Resources dept of one of the big 12 universities in the nation, so i should know better than most that school is there for anyone that is willing to learn.
I like to think I have what it takes and I do plan on returning to school and actually focusing on my art. Thanks for the kind words and keep up the awesome work. You definitely have a watch from me!

No problemo love.

Well I've finished school with passing marks that's for sure. Didn't apply anything for school this year, so I'll be working my buns off to find a job and to get my drivers license.

As for this year, It was okay but I was expecting more with the 3rd Year Visual and Creative Arts program. Plus it was probably my toughest year due to personal reasons.

What about you love? I heard that you made your first animated movie this year, is that true?

tarkheki In reply to TipsyMcBoozerton [2009-06-06 02:31:41 +0000 UTC]

I sure did! I finally, FINALLY graduated... and will convocate on the 11th.

Isn't it always the thing? Everyone always has personal issues float to surface in the final years... what is UP with that Universe?

Didn't apply for school? You mean, you have more to go?

TipsyMcBoozerton In reply to tarkheki [2009-06-06 02:50:40 +0000 UTC]

Awesome to hear!

What is up with the universe? I think whatever God(s) we believe in hates us or something.

Possible. I don't even know myself. If so, It might be either continuing with a career in art or something completely different. Though I still want to keep my artistic talent, but I just need to do something else at the meantime.

Well, the way my Medicine Man explained it to me- when we truly want something in this life, the universe- everyone and everything- will stand in our way. it's the test to see how much, and if we are willing to endure in order to achieve it. If we do, we earn it. If not, we loose it! XD

I wasn't basing this of any of the existing creation stories. It is taboo to take a story that doesn't rightfully belong to you and produce it in any sort of form.

Thank you so much for the comment! I'm glad I caught the stylization and atmosphere- I'm hoping my film will too!

But here's a little clarification for you- those are not called "totems". In fact, the word "totem" is an Anishinabe [Ojibway] word for "Clan". Sadly, due to rampant mis-use of the term at the hands of settlers, anthropologists and other non-communtiy members, it's become a term for a new-age concept that doesn't really exist in the cultures of the Native Americans.
What I drew was not "totems" but more proper- the mythical being, or spirits, or symbols in the North West Pacific Style of art.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vinare In reply to tarkheki [2009-03-22 20:22:23 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't totem mean Power? Oh well. I didn't mean anything by it... Totem animals... Yeah. So any way the piece is still cool.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tarkheki In reply to Vinare [2009-03-22 20:52:15 +0000 UTC]

No, "Totem" does NOT mean power. "Totem Animals" comes from the term/concept that the Anishinabe cultures would use the symbols of Animals to decipher the clans one from another- sort of like a last name. That way they would know who not to marry (incest), and what was their communtiy obligations (the same for the North West Pacific Coast Native, but their term for it isn't "totem" it's "Moieties", and that also differs form Band to Band) .

Thanks for the comment!

Raven, Eagle, Wolf, and whales and they look like their traditional carvings as well. This is a brilliant piece and i hope you do put up the movie even if it is only a rough one. Native American culture has always fascinated me and I'm glad to see that their culture brought to life in the way you have in your poster it is truly remarkable and awe-inspiring.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tarkheki In reply to Kiinotasha [2009-03-21 14:14:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the comment!
However, I can assure you that Native American culture is far more than just animals. A lot of people "find interest" in it because they believe that most of the new-age jargon is what it reflects, but it does not. My film is only a smear of anything and everything it has to offer. So don’t be fooled- to truly know the culture and what it has to offer, you should get to your local friendship center and see what it’s all about for yourself!
