Well, to be the nerd I am: it's actually the fault of the Christian Church and Religion invading the Scandinavian territories. In order to make them more "demonic", coupled with literature written in the 18th century, and the fact they found one helmet [ceremonial, not warrior] that appeared to have "antlers" on it...it became a popular type cast for the concept of the "demons" and "Devils" that viking were associated with. The Opera was already a long after-thought of the concept. XD
