Description Okay, this is an OLD tutorial I did several years back on a clean way to extract lineart to its own separate layer. I guess I never uploaded it to DA either, eh? (But I'm certain I uploaded it to Y!Gal...) Well, after looking it over I have decided to re-make it again. I never actually LIKED the lineart I used as the example and it still bugs me, lol! Anyway, I have more stuff to add so... expect a new tut in the works.

I have been using this method for years now and it works like a gem. Can even beautifully extract sketches to a new layer with no hassle. Honestly, I'm surprised more people don't use this method! You can even make this an action to save time and repetition, lol! Anyway, enjoy and hope this helps some of you out there.

In the updated tut I will most likely include the action for all to use, lol!

That's all from this peanut gallery.

Art © Meh, thanks. ^__^

*snuggles* YUSH!!! Don't worry, when I get around to making the update I'll be sure to include it as a PS action, but I want to give everyone the opportunity to know exactly how it works first. ^_~

Oh dear... and you thought you needed the registration number to "install" them? O__O

*luffs on you sooooo much*

Okay, installing new brushes/actions/patterns/etc are pretty easy... you just copy and paste them into the proper folder where PS is installed.

Go to that folder in program files (will most likely be inside an "Adobe" folder), and look for a folder named "Presets." Inside that folder you will have all the other folders you need and they'll be named exactly what you'll want them to... such as Brushes for the installed brushes folder, lol! Anywho, just pop the files into the corresponding folders, restart PS and you're set to go. If you go in any of the folders you will see the samples PS already offers you, and you'll also see the extension each files has. (Brushes have an .abr extension.) Here's a GREAT place to go for really awesome free brushes: [link] Just take note of whether they are "royalty free" or not. They also offer patterns as well. ^__^

Go ahead and try installing a brush and let me know how it goes. You do know how to load the files in the brush setting on PS, right?

Okay. I clicked download on a delicious looking splatter set. It came in a winrar.zip file. I scrolled through program files and found the brushes folder, HOWEVER, it had another folder inside that said Adobe Photoshop only. One) What's that? Two) Should I extract the files first? Three) Was I doing it right so far? I feel REALLY stupid. REALLY.

That is SO weird... I kept waiting and waiting for a reply but it never made it to my inbox... O_o;;;

*hugs* You're not stupid, hon, just nervous. Everyone is when they start messing with things they're unsure of and just KNOW they could possibly cause a catastrophe, hehe! No worries.

Ignore that extra folder. You won't need to worry or bother with it. Yes, you do need to extract the files from the zip or else PS can't recognize they're even there. Just pop 'em in alongside of all those other brushes you see occupying the folder.

And yes, indeedy-do, you are doing it right so far! ^__^

Okay! I downloaded the brushes to my brushes folder and extracted them using Extract Here. When I did, I got the folder that I was expecting, but also the file that was within the folder. Do I need to keep both files or can I get rid of one since they seem to be copied versions of each other?

Most likely the second folder says MacOX or something like that. You can delete it.

But make sure that the brush file itself is not in a folder within the Brushes folder, but alongside the other .abr files.

It DOES say that! "Waaaaow~!" Okay enough of me being silly. I'll delete it, and the brush file is sitting there sure enough..but I can't see the brushes on my Photoshop..where did they go? Or am I being a nurf nurf again?

You're being a nurf! j/k! When you install new brushes/patterns/styles/etc, you have to "load" them up to be able to use them. It's cool this way because the more brushes and stuff you have loaded, the slower PS itself loads up. Anywho, go to where your brushes are at the top, or right click on the screen somewhere (lol) ... well... make sure the brush tool IS selected... then you should see an arrow at the top right corner. Click on that. In the menu that pops down, look for the options that say Load, Replace, etc. Replace will get rid of the brushes you currently have up and you will only see the new brushes. Load allows you to replace or append it to the brushes you have up. If you replace the brushes, don't worry. You can restore them by clicking on the restore default option. Also, at the bottom of that menu you will see a list of names that look mysteriously similar to the names of brushes in the Brushes folder. You should also now see the name of the spatter brushes you just installed. If you don't, just feel free to use the load option or restart PS. Otherwise, feel free to click on that name and it will ask you to append or replace. Pick one and watch the brushes added to the brushes window.

And, voila! There we have it... new brushes to play with and luuuuuurve. ^___~

oO thats a lotta steps haha. And I had people acting like mine was lots of work. I find it amusing how many different ways there are of doing this

Lol, I agree... it is a LOT of steps. In the end I just made it into a nice little PS action. I suppose I could be seen as lazy, lol! But yeah, once it's set up, it works like a dream.

And no, yours did NOT have so many steps... @__@ have no idea why anyone would complain!
