Description

Outlaw Trail
Faerie Promise ridden by Chess Knight
Number: 13
Team: Lawmen

I promise I am making way on the huge list of art I have to do, but I was kidnapped by my muse (she's a little dramatic) and held at gunpoint (and also apparently quite violent) until I did this.

Another attempt at a speedpaint

I was doing really well, too. The sky was first, then the hillside, and I had shoddy sketches of where Mossy, Peanut and Chess were...and it took around half an hour...then things slowed down when I started on the characters

But, I'm actually pretty happy - two hours tops And the sky was the quickest part - hence why it kinda sucks and why I really avoid drawing skies

Basically, just Chess and Mossy (this time in full costume, though without the saddlebags) taking a walk around AVRRA with Peanut before supper.

This is another Bonus Training Pic, prior to Chapter 1.

Story

Mossy's ear flicked backwards and she tossed her head once before arching it back over the snaffle in her mouth, cantering ever more keenly into a contact that wasn't there. Chess was quiet, listening to the sound of her even breathing through flared nostrils and the muffled sound of her hooves as they picked a path through the long, yellowing grasses around the widespread grounds at AVRRA.

Mossy didn't have a care in the world; despite the soft cloak billowing back over her quarters, the press of the western saddle and the strap behind her ears, she was content just carrying them ever further from the commotion in the camping fields.

Ever since everyone had been gathered to listen to Lew Paine and someone with the unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on how you looked at it) surname of Walker had spoken out, tensions had been rising in the camp. It had started off with a cold shoulder or a sneer here and there, but after a twist of fate involving a hangman's noose, a bar of soap and someone's rather mauled cowboy hat, things had been escalating. Just two hours ago Chess had seen three competitors - two of them in elegant dresses - manhandle a fourth (rather annoyed) someone into the automatic watertrough near the fence line.

Chess tacked up and got out fast, the minute they raced out of their trailer - still dripping wet - wielding a lasso rope.

Chess could only hope that Roo and Spawn didn't get accidentally caught up in the mix; Spawn was edgy enough as it was, what with the number of horses and riders repeatedly walking past the trailer. In fact, the young blonde had a sneaking suspicion the high maintenance mare was responsible for the aforementioned mauled hat.

Not that she or its owner had any way of proving it.

There was a bark just up ahead, and Chess sat deep in the saddle, relaxing through her back and squeezing her fingers around the loose reins as she pressed her lower leg forward fractionally. Mossy reacted instantly; plenty used to body signals, more than direct aids. She dropped out of the canter, her head lifting and hocks sliding beneath her, her forelegs planted.

Dust and loose earth sprayed forward, a couple of divots sailing through the air before Mossy snorted and stood tall, playing with the bit in her mouth. Chess absently picked a burr out of her mane and scanned around for the flash of tricolour fur that was her dog.

Peanut scooted up to them, her gait methodical and low, shoulders hunched, back end tucked and ears trained forwards.

Chess smirked.

"Did you find a rabbit, Pea?"

The little dog whined quietly, not looking up, but still gazing off down the hill they'd reached.

They were somewhere near the peak, and there was nothing around but the brilliant fiery colour of the sky and a dying sun. Near the base of the hill the earth was pock-marked with rabbit warrens, tall nettles and wild flowers that spaced out as they spread up the incline. Just beyond the end of the field was another pathway.

Chess smiled as she recognised Cat and Spur, apparently finding their own way back from their ride. Cat would need filling in on the water trough incident soon; she'd missed it entirely but Spur had needed to stretch his legs.

Peanut whined again, and Chess glanced down, and then around them.

"Okay...Go get the rabbits."

Peanut didn't even wait to respond, she bounded off, keeping low and using the untamed grasses to shield her as she streaked down the hill.

Chess laughed, pulling up the hood of her cloak as the evening breeze swept up towards them. Mossy's tail flicked idly and she breathed out in a contented sigh. Their shadows were long a across the grass; shafts lit up with gold from the sky between the fragile petals of lilac flowers. It was late.

Five more minutes for Peanut to find a rabbit then it was back to camp. People would be setting up their campfires and spits by now, and Chess wasn't going to miss the next outbreak.

I really want to try some of these with other riders in them XD Maybe I'll get around to that at some point

And sorry that someone's character got thrown in a trough . If anyone feels like working off of this, I'd love to hear where your story goes

The grass was a single preset brush on PS. The sky was entirely done with a soft circle brush and mostly on 100% opacity.
The flowers dotted about used a brush downloaded from this set: [link] Β§ion=&global=1&q=flower+brushes#/dlc98r
And the photo I used as a sky reference is here: [link]

I wouldn't worry too much; there's still a lot of people who haven't gotten anything done yet. You have till the beginning of June

Yeah. I know it sounds kinda mean but I hope not too many more people join. There are so many people already and I don't wanna put time and effort into something if people aren't going to actually follow up on it :/

Well registration closed yesterday, so no one else can join. Besides; you can just draw art, write your stories and have fun. Whether others finish or drop out doesn't have to concern you ^^

Oh, definitely. I agree, but if someone drops out, it just gives you a chance to team up with someone else

The lists of entrants are coming out now, so you just have to track down someone you know who's on your team and ask. I think most people are keen to RP and team up, so it shouldn't be too hard

Tattered-Dreams In reply to DarkDragonNights [2012-05-24 16:45:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

But this one didn't take a whole lot of patience XD. I deliberately did it as a speedpaint - just throwing colours and shapes on and doing a bit of a tidy up at the end. I'm too much of a perfectionist to do it properly, but if you don't have a long attention span, speed painting might be worth experimenting with

I'm totally willing to be thrown into a trough! Sounds like something that Nienna would manage to get herself into. I'll try and work it out.

Haha (psst, the point is you weren't willing XD) But that's awesome. Just some crazy happenings to flesh out a little story

Have fun with it, though I'll have to see what you come up with.

DarkDragonNights In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-05-24 16:48:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm willing, Nienna is most definitely not. But it is a great way to make the whole thing feel more real and fun.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to DarkDragonNights [2012-05-24 16:53:57 +0000 UTC]

Haha - that explains it

And yes - its proven Throwing someone in a trough is entertainment all 'round But honestly, getting artists to interact is half of the enjoyment in this, I think.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkDragonNights In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-05-24 17:06:42 +0000 UTC]

Entertainment for everyone but the person being thrown, they just get ticked and start chasing people with a lasso while screaming every profanity they can think of.
