Description

I'm seriously on a roll. But I'm thinking there'll be a break again now - I have to do another assignment due next week

First off, I tried a slightly new thing with the shading this time. I actually like how it came out - what do you guys think? Its all done with the dodge and burn tools, which is what I normally do, but I haven't blended any of the shading together - I've just left scribbles of colour all over.

And Twitch has been plaiting up Lakewood horses again

More training of Mossy, this time with Becca. I'm trying to get this girl some AHA points so she's hopefully a finest by the time her breeding arrives

This is a form of driving game. I know about Parelli, but this may crop up in other practices too

The 'driving line' on a horse is at the base of the neck and goes from the withers, down the line of the neck to the top of the breast bone or just between the forelimbs. Motion and pressue in front of this line encourage movement backwards while pressure behind the line encourage forward movement. This is the same for any horse, regardless of if they do natural methods.

Becca's literally just holding the stick high, keeping the 'pressure' on where Mossy can see it. Angle is off slightly, so the stick is just behind her withers, sending her forwards. The stick is immobile if the horse responds and only moves if the horse does not listen to a finger being pointed for more speed. You always start with pointing a finger and work up.

Becca doesn't do as much natural as Chess, so Mossy's one of the better horses to learn with. Here, they're cantering/running around the outdoor arena so Becca can learn the basics.

Mossy's ref: [link]

Chess found she barely had to do more than provide base instructions. Becca may not do natural training, but she was naturally self aware and conveyed certainty in her movements that Mossy picked up and and responded to readily.

The blonde shifted on the fence, finding a more comfortable seat. "Now when you bring her in, do what Twitch was doing in Wickerwood - switch your hands and redirect her straight away."

Becca nodded to show she understood, keeping her posture tall as Mossy cantered about her in an even circle. The brunette ducked towards her quarters, switching her hands with only a little fumble and pointed out, holding the stick to block her from entering the centre.

Mossy snorted and obediently spun away again, picking up a canter and settling into the new bend.

"Good!" Chess called, just as Austin approached, dragging a shredded stable rug. "What the...?"

He shot her an exasperated look as Becca started on the yoyo game - backing Mossy to the end of the line with the smallest motions possible, before bringing her back in the same way.

"Karma," Austin said. Chess snickered.

The little filly was nearly two. She'd grayed out fast in her first year, but slowed abruptly when she was around 18 months. She was now an even rose grey with a mostly white mane, her sabino marks still visible on her coat. She was also full of energy, high maintenance, very intelligent and too adorable for her own good.

They had thought dressage would be good for her to get into when she was backed. All the movements and the intensity of the work would give her something to focus on, but it was becoming clear that she was no dressage horse. She wanted to be active, not precise.

"How many rugs is that, now?" Chess asked, eyes finding the large tear running down one shoulder, the stuffing exploding outwards.

"This month?" Austin asked. "Two. At least she doesn't need one during the day now the weather's better - and she's going out naked on most days, too."

"Maybe we could rough her off, when she's three?" Chess wondered aloud. "She's not going to get big boned - both her parents are too fine - but she's not exactly fragile. She could handle it better than all this."

Austin didn't speak as he climbed up onto the fence next to her. "Maybe. But she's only two. Some of this destructive stuff will be her teething. See how she goes and we'll work it out."

"Ooh, you're having a rare 'smart moment', " Chess teased.

"Rare?" Austin demanded. "I frequently have smart moments."

Chess scoffed.

"Oh, look, there's Twitch. You know I can just yell out your full name - I'm sure she could hear me-"

"You wouldn't dare," Chess scowled. "Fine. Your IQ is far superior to the norm; you're regularly coming up with genius plans. Now shut up."

Austin beamed and raised a finger, marking off a 1 on an invisible tally chart in front of him. Chess elbowed him and sent him sailing to the ground.

"Can you two act like adults for two minutes?" Becca called out.

She'd turned to look at them, and next to her, Mossy was laying on the ground. Her chestnut coat was still clean, though, so she didn't appear to have rolled.

"And help me," Becca added, thumbing over her shoulder at the Arabian mare. "What do I do?"

Chess laughed. "Same thing. Point her forwards and if she doesn't listen, you put pressure behind. Once she's up, keep at it - see if you can drive her from her shoulder."

Becca frowned, quickly trying to understand the instruction. Her expression cleared as it registered and she obediently turned back to the mare.

Mossy's ears flicked and she licked her lips once as Becca raised the line. Groaning, she got to her feed, shaking herself out. Loose hair wafted to the rubber and sand surface as Becca stood at her shoulder and pointed her on again, lifting the stick over her back.

Mossy snorted and curled her neck in, springing into a trot. Becca kept her on the outside track and they did a circuit, Becca jogging lightly.

"Canter!" Austin called out, smirking. "You haven't even broken a sweat yet!"

"Shut it!" Becca yelled back, but she lifted the line again and, when Mossy's trot just lengthened, circled the end of the stick in the air.

She skipped a beat and stepped into canter - Becca now outright running to keep level with her shoulder.

No one said anything as they breezed down the long side and Twitch came to the fence with an armful of empty haynets.

"When you're ready," Chess called as they sailed past. "Take the pressure off, use your body and bring her back to you."

Becca - beginning to tire - did so straight away. She let the stick slide down a little and curled her shoulders in. It was all Mossy needed to bend to the inside, drop straight to walk and press her face into Becca's stomach.

Twitch smiled fondly as Becca laughed. She backed her up with the line, insisting on her space. And Austin vaulted over the school's rail.

"Right. I have to go find another rug, or Karma's going to freeze tonight."

"And I wanted to ask if anyone's already moved Oma's haynet?" Twitch added. "Its not in his stall, or on the yard."

Becca frowned. "He had it outside this morning - are you sure its not hanging somewhere?"

Twitch nodded. "Sure. I'll check again, though."

"No need," Chess interrupted, pointing over towards the Garage. "I've found the culprit."

Misfit - their grey and white pygmy goat - was trotting across the green, her tiny horn stubs caught in the knots of Oma's red haynet. Hershey loped after her, leftover stalks of meadow hay in his little jaws.

"Oh," Twitch remarked, deadpan.

"Have fun," Chess called to Becca, who was looping up Mossy's rope to prepare to mount up. "We've got to do a goat roundup."

Becca beamed. "Good luck."

Dropping the collected nets, Chess and Twitch headed for the barn, and the spare long ropes, looking forward to another goat chase.

Time - about 6-7 hours? Started this morning, and I slept in
Idea of poses from my new book - 101 horsemanship exercises. I love it.

CatPrincesse In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-17 22:04:55 +0000 UTC]

It looks nice, even though I'm used to the extremely overboard shading that I usually put on my horses. I love me some shiny horses, so I use black and white and blur them for my shading.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to CatPrincesse [2012-03-17 22:11:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. And I don't mind shiny horses, but I thiink there's a place for them. Summer time, when they've moulted out and are bathed for showing makes sense. Here Mossy is just being worked at home for exercise (and to teach Becca about the groundgames). its also early spring and still cold on some days, so she hasn't moulted completely. Having loose hairs and half a winter coat wouldn't make her look too shiny XD

And I used to use black and white to shade, but I found it altered the base colour too much and made everything look to contrasting. I have become obsessed with the dodge and burn tools . I have no idea how people can use black and white on separate layers to shade, now. My way means you don't have a base layer left untouched, because dodge/burn only works if you use it onto the layer directly, but I swear by it now Different methods

CatPrincesse In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-18 23:36:45 +0000 UTC]

I like to draw shiny horses, so I never really think about the season and such...and here the weather is already warm. I just did some serious grooming on my horse today and gave him a bath, and got so much of his winter fur off that he's all pretty and shiny right now.

I used to use dodge and burn tools, but I don't really know how to use them very well..And I like to use the black and white because it makes for very shiny horses

and you're welcome for the vote

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to CatPrincesse [2012-03-19 00:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha If you prefer to draw shiny horses, frequent baths is a great excuse I personally just love horses when they're growing in their winter fluff and you can lose your fingers in it when you stroke them

I learned dodge and burn by just a lot of experimentation. Mostly, though, I keep to highlight and midtones and fairly low exposure.

And thank you so much! I do really appreciate it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatPrincesse In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-19 00:44:39 +0000 UTC]

Here, it doesn't get that cold so my horse didn't get very fluffy....definitely not enough to lose my fingers in..

I might try working with dodge and burn again sometime, but for the time being, I like the way black and white looks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to CatPrincesse [2012-03-19 00:49:00 +0000 UTC]

XD. In the UK its pretty much cold or chilly 300 days of the year. We only have a few days of warmth Fluffy ponies are not uncommon.

If you're happy, keep doing it, I say There's no point changing or trying different things if you don't get enjoyment from it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatPrincesse In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-19 04:38:24 +0000 UTC]

Weather here is about the opposite..Right now the weather is trying to decide whether it wants to rain on us or not, but it hasn't been even slightly chilly for weeks. It's been in the 70-80 degrees zone mostly and getting warmer fast.

I've been experimenting a bit, but I figure that until I find something I like better, I'm happy with what I'm doing now. And when I don't get enjoyment while I draw, I don't draw at all. I end up not liking whatever I draw when I'm not in the mood to draw anyway...like when I was taking art classes, I learned a few things, but I didn't really have fun so I ended up in a huge artblock for a while..so I'm not taking art classes any more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to CatPrincesse [2012-03-21 09:51:09 +0000 UTC]

So your conditions are kinda good for shiny ponies

And that's exactly what I think like. My art teacher used to try to make me draw all sorts of things, but I just wasn't interested so I began to resent art lessons. I dropped art way before my GCSEs because I couldn't cope with being told what to draw all the time.

Now I draw what I feel like drawing and I think I've improved because I have a vested interest

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatPrincesse In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-27 03:09:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Lovely shiny ponies!

I know that I've gotten a lot better at drawing horses...I look at old drawings and think "I thought that was amazing!?" I learned about traditional art in my art classes, and I don't have much interest in traditional art right now, so I didn't really like art classes.

I draw what I want to draw and just for fun...it's really hard for me to draw when it's not only for the fun of it. Which is why I haven't really tried to sell anything more than horse designs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to CatPrincesse [2012-03-28 11:33:46 +0000 UTC]

I find its an odd mix between inspiring and depressing to look back at things you drew that you thought were good, but at least it means you're still learning And I think I go through art phases, too.

I always wanted to do digital art, like I saw on here, but I had no idea how. Now I'm getting used to photoshop, I went on a hype with it and I haven't drawn traditional for a while. Art classes, when I took them, used to really restrict me, too, so I never much enjoyed them, either. Why draw if you don't enjoy it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatPrincesse In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-28 16:27:01 +0000 UTC]

I know I've gotten a lot better than I was..and I love the feeling I get when I look at my drawing and I just love it

Until I joined dA, I had no clue what digital art was..after I found out, I wanted to try it so I downloaded gimp and started off with my mouse And if I'm not enjoying it, I hate just about everything I draw..and that's not fun.

I love Mossy's hairstlye ;o
The new shading style is looking good! A lot "messier" and to me it seems "noisier," if you know what I mean? The way it's shaded makes the art seem a lot... busier. I have no idea how to describe it XD
The shading gives Mossy a much more realistic effect, since those scribble lines kinda make it look like hair, thus she's less "smooth."
I just love it <3 Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks Its an Arabian running plait (only I like plaiting the forelock in sometimes ) You can google them, if you're interested. I can be a bit of a plait freak XD

Lol, it does look messier and kind of hectic. I dunno how good it looks, but I do like it. I just don't think I'll be converting entirely XD. I do think you're right, though - I tend to smudge over the top, so they all look really smooth and this does at least take that away

Thanks again

Thank you And I do love drawing Mossy.

I'm a member of the HARPG game on DA, where I get to draw a lot of horses and work out all their genetics. I did tons of genes in college, so they're a bit of an obsession of mine XD. Thanks for the offer, but I'm okay with what I know at the minute

I did learn more from all the other gene nuts on here, but most of it was college studying horses does that for you XD. I have heard of satin and pearl/barlink factor. Not my favourites, but they have their upsides. I prefer champagne, but I'm not too fond of dilutions in general, lol. I prefer working with bases and modifiers

Ahh, I love W4 and splash tobi Sooty+ horses the most. I'm not in collage yet, but I plan to study genes ^_^ And I can only really do 'paintings' XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Lenalee11 [2012-03-17 18:37:01 +0000 UTC]

I really don't like white horses, or max sb. It's just a personal thing, but I don't like it so much when horses have white faces and light eyes

Splash isn't so bad - though I vastly prefer heterozygous sabino. Its really interesting to see what happens to markings when Spl and Sb are both in a horse's genes and fight each other

Tobianos I don't really have an opinion either way. Some are adorable, others not so much XD. I do like sooty, though. And Silver dapple I have a soft spot for cat-tracks and birdcatcher spots, though they're not genes in their own right.

Study of genes is really intensive. There's so many variables and little bits to understand, but if it interests you, then it's just a lot of fun.

What do you mean, too, you can only do 'paintings'? Sorry, I can be a little dense Do you not draw traditionally?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lenalee11 In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-17 18:54:01 +0000 UTC]

I do dray traditionally, but I do 'paintings' on my tablet. Thus the quotes. XD [link] [link] And Silver dapple is adorable! I take it you know Austin then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Lenalee11 [2012-03-17 19:01:24 +0000 UTC]

You could put up traditional sketches, then and I really like those paintings I love the brilliance of colour and the unfocused effect is really different.

And which Austin? (One of my HARPG characters is called Austin, but I don't think that's who you mean XD)
