GMO means Genetically Modified Organics. There are many reasons why something may be GMO, but typically it's so that people can use stronger pesticides and weedkillers on their fields. It's really that that makes it not good for you

Mostly refers to genetically modified foods - they've gotten a bad rep because one of the biggest companies (monsanto) known for GMO's isn't exactly morally upstanding and has made some pretty effed up products.
For example, at my old university, some researchers created a 'golden rice' type that outputs 20 times as muchΒ Beta-carotene as usual, which the human body needs to produce A vitamin. It was intended especially for poor regions of the world, since they don't have a very broad diet, and often died or had health issues because of a lack of vitamin A.Β
However, fear of GMO's put a stopper on getting this life saving rice sort out...
I find it tragically funny that Golden Rice can't get approved because of GMO-fear, but Monsanto has no trouble getting their s*** accepted
