Cold gripped the little toki as she finally collapsed into the snow, unable to keep her legs under her any longer. She could feel the mountains looking over her, their shadow reaching far over the smooth white snow, dotted with a winding trail of red, farther than she could see. Suess’ eyes felt heavy, much like the rest of her as the cold snow soaked through her belly fur. She could no longer feel the stinging pain of her wounds as snowflakes slowly drifting down from the dark star sky.  Her breath came in ragged, pained gasps, small puffs of breath clouded the air as she felt her consciousness slipping, her eyes slowly starting to drift shut.

The sharp sound of snow crunching underfoot caught the toki’s attention. Her blue eyes strained to see, lacking the energy to move her head. The dark figure of Nira, her black eagle companion, lingering in front of her, her shiny black eyes watching her, silently as she approached the toki. She prodded Suess with her beak, preening her man fur in an attempt to rouse her further, but she didn’t budge. She gave a soft screech but left her alone then, stretching out her wings and taking off, tossing up snow as she disappeared out of Suess’ sight.

Her heart ached for him, that her friend was leaving her on the side of the mountain, alone, but she understood as well. Her wounds were grave, it was cold, and dark, Aippaq only knew what could be out there on the foot hills of Elder’s ridge. She knew it was likely she wouldn’t make it to see the dawn. Suess let her eyes close again, contented to simply fall asleep and drift away, taking comfort in knowing her friend would be alright at least, soaring through the wide-open skies. She wondered if Nira stay that way, find her own kind again, or if she would make friends with another tokota, and go on more adventures, remembering Suess as she had been once, fun and full of life, not as she was now, cold and tired.

Another sound shook Suess out of her thoughts, peeling her eyes open to see the familiar sleep silhouette of black feathers. Nira regarded her from over her shoulder for a moment before turning her gaze back downhill. It seemed her friend had returned, intent on protecting her from whatever it was that was still roaming the mountains. While warmed by the gesture, she couldn’t help but worry for her. A single eagle would not be much more than an annoyance to a bear, or mountain line, let alone anything bigger. More snow crunching drew her attention elsewhere, out of the corner of her eyes, Suess could see another black eagle had landed a few feet away, and soon another joined them, and another, and another. After a few moments, eagles dotted the snow side as far as her eyes could see, just as the first golden lights of dawn peaked over the mountain. She wasn’t sure if it had been Aippaq that had sent them to find her, or simply an act of kindness from her friend, regardless, somehow, Suess found the strength to stand.

I love the image and I love the story! ;o; I'm glad she's OK in the end.
However, I'm going to be that annoying scowling-pursed-mouth-English-teacher that everyone draws badly with stick figures and hates and I hope you don't mind the spelling correction; you put "line" instead of "lion" for mountain lion. xD
