I don't often do speedpaints, but I really feel like I should.So yeah - you can name any classic fairy tale and the odds are very good that I have character designs floating around for it - sometimes more than one set.
This is my latest version of Beauty and the Beast, one of everybody's favourite stories (including mine). I have sort of a soft spot for lizard-men, and people don't generally take that approach for the Beast - and probably with good reason, as it doesn't really make much sense. But, as we've established, I like lizard-men, so this is my departure from the usual set of boar/lion/yeti-riding-an-ox-holding-an-eel-and-a-crane Beasts.
Of course, compared to the Prince, designing the Beast is easy-peasy. It's the prince where it all starts to go to heck. I don't have a firm handle on the Prince form of this Beast yet, but when I do, perhaps I'll post a sketch.

Interesting, as you've done an interesting and properly ugly Beast. He's truly ugly in that he falls in that Uncanny Valley, too close to human, but not human, and thus more sad.
Then again, as you've noted, the real challenge is drawing a man worthy of being a Beast.

He reminds me of the 1920 Lon Chaney version of Eric from the Phantom of the Opera. ^^

You know what...this was how I imagined the Beast, too. Ever since I was little, I always pictured the Beast as being more like a big reptile-man than the typical wolf/cat/buffalo/bigfoot sort of creature.
Hooray for creativity, artistic mad-skills, and lizard-men!

I laughed when I saw this, not because it's not beautiful (especially for a speed paint), rather, because this is more or less the way I've always pictured Beast.

I appreciate this. I'm writing a B+B retelling with a Beast who's mostly covered in scales, and it's hard finding visual inspiration. Fur is too cuddly!

Sigh, I'm still kind of in love with this image. I think what I enjoy about it is just how dessicated he looks. I mean, he seems so hollowed out in how you designed him, like he can only take about another week of living the way he does before he just caves in on himself and there is nothing left.
And she's so fresh and innocent looking, just like this little peach in the middle of all this gloom.
What really sells me though is that slight, slight smile tugging at the corner of his mouth that makes you think maybe he's starting to remember there are good things in the world, that everything in it is not the shadows of his castle.
It's really a nice, clever and well felt and thought out take on the arcehtype. I only wish there was a story for this, or possibly some more art

Have you ever read the book "The Hollow Kingdom"? If you haven't, you should, it is pretty flipping amazing; this picture is pretty much of the characters Marak and Kate.

i rather like this version of the beast. we all have a primal fear of things with scales so it would be far more monstrous to have a lizard beast than a lion beast. youve still managed to give him a human enough look that we can understand belle eventually getting used to him and caring very much for him. and i dont know why but i love that his hands are bigger than her face...sense of safety?

Beauty looks so kind and sweet and the Beast is so awesome looking. He's definitely different than most of the Beasts I usually see...
But I have to admit.. I'm a big fan of Disney's Beast. When I was a little kid, I got so depressed that he turned back into his human form. I wasn't sad that he almost died. I was sad because he didn't look cool anymore. XD

Actually, Beauty is blonde because a lot of my princesses end up as brunettes, in spite of Aster and Alice and all the blonde girls I draw.
So, to answer your questions
-Yes, a very rough one for the princess
-No - it's more of a cautionary morality story and not much fun to try and adapt.
-Maybe? If I do, they're very old.
-Yes, for some version of this story - it might be Cap-O-Rushes, but same thing.
-Yes, several sets.

Wow. Just... wow. I love your character design for belle! I know I tell you this all the time, but the color palette is superb. Especially the way her hair, skin, and blouse contrast with the the dark but saturated colors in the background! Really... how do you do it? *-*
I like that you tried to take the beast another way, but I think I prefer his Disney character design, because it's not so scary! >.< Your design is definitely new and interesting, but he seems so sinister. Kinda like... Voldemort with that long slit nose, gaunt face, slits for eyes. Very impressive work.

Yeah, he's pretty ugly. I absolutely adore Disney's Beast - but he's so awesome-looking that the prince is kind of a letdown, amirite? So my beast is intentionally a bit uglier and nastier-looking - he takes a lot more getting used to, I think.
He is a bit Voldemort-y, right? I never read past the first three books, so that never occurred to me.

I don't remember how he's described in the books, but if you've seen some of the more recent movies, Voldemort is slightly like that, only green. XD

Oh wow! This is truly a nice change from the usual fluff-and-cuddles sort of things I'm used to seeing [which I like, however these are always so much more fun and creative ;D].
This is a very, VERY lovely piece - you can see the prince underneath the creepy, scaly exterior [and I'm assuming he's quite handsome too

I love scaly critters...finally, a non furry, Ranma 1/2 referencing beast (seriously, some of them do end up looking like Taro XD). I love all the different versions of "beast" that people come up with.
I love that you left him really thin hair...and made his hands awkwardly huge...and scaly...and his teeth pointy. Can he stick to walls with those giant hands?
The colors are also great...subdued and gorgeous.
I agree...the beast is easy to do compared to the prince because everyone has different expectations for what the prince "should" look like.
