Finally finished coloring this. The background reminds me of Bob Ross's stuff.

A collab I did with , aka Dojo. Dojo did the lineart, I did the coloring, and this is out it turned out! Basically my Zafara character, Targad, jumping off the dock at Picard's cabin. (Dojo's character)

I like how this turned out. Layering got complicated after a while, easily 40+ layers. But it worked! Just had to touch up with with the dodge tool after, and do some smudging for fur texture and reflections.

Hope ya like it Dojo!

Yeah I agree about the pillars. Infact, they looked a lot worse before. Someone above suggested I make them blend into the water, which I agreed. Basically if you think about it, I added the pillars in 3 minutes. xD

Thanks for the great comment.

The coloring is just wonderful on this. I remember when you hoped to "someday" get good at doing realism in your art.. I think you're well on your way. It's wonderful!

Am I first to respond? Insomnia makes me feel like a stalker...

Anywho, this is pretty great! The characters have a real physical presence here that makes them seem especially on that dock rather than just 'drawn on the dock' (subtleties in shading, I would venture), if that makes sense. I like the expressions, the 'caught in the moment' nature of the jump and of course that gorgeous background...

Only because the 'critique' flag is up do i mention that I think the support piles (pilliars?) of the dock don't seem to be in the water fluidly. By this I mean that something in the way the dock emerges from the water makes the water seem to me to be more clay-like and less fluid. I'm not an amazing artist at all >< but my (I feel guilty saying this) suggestions would be either some transparency of the pillars into the water, or I think more aptly- due to the amount of light on the water- if the pillars were somewhat reflected in the water.

I feel stupid even critiquing; this looks so good. If I didn't know you were a digital artist, my first instinct glancing at this picture was that the jumping character (targad?) was a cutout from a photo of somebody in an anthro-suit jumping... He's just got so much of that great 'feel' you seem to always instill...
Anywho, great work, sorry for the long comment!

[this is the comment to your original post!]

Hehe, you were close!

Thanks for the comments, and again, I really liked the suggestion for the pillars. Thanks for critiqueing, otherwise I would never have known. And don't fret, just because you aren't an "amazing artist", doesn't mean you don't have eyes like you said. I bet if I had a 5 year old brother, he could see flaws. Or suggest things. I've never been around docks on lakes much, so I never thought about the pillar stuff. Thanks again!

And thanks for the great comment. ^^ I don't get many like these often. Thanks!

daemonire In reply to Temiree [2007-08-19 09:09:02 +0000 UTC]

A smidge less maybe? It seems little too noticible, though granted I'm specifically looking at it. But it definately removes the 'claylike' feel it seemed to have before!

Temiree In reply to daemonire [2007-08-19 09:14:09 +0000 UTC]

Nevermind, it was easier than I thought at first. I updated the pillar thing. How is it now?

daemonire In reply to Temiree [2007-08-19 09:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Bingo, I love it. <3 <3 <3 I really need to learn to be able to work as fast as you do though... geez even little things seem to take me hours! Now get some sleep, oh hardworking one!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Temiree In reply to daemonire [2007-08-19 09:28:57 +0000 UTC]

Hehe yeah I should get some sleep. xD It's when I'm tired and in a rush I see some flaws. I just added some blackness to the trees for contrast.

But really, to pick up speed, you just gotta know what you're doing. For the pillars, I knew that I had a layer set up for the ones below the water. You said turn em down a tad, so I turned down the layer opacity. Boom! Done.

And for example the contrast in the trees I just added. I just made the color black, fiddled with the brush so it scattered. Went over it. Boom! Done.

Like I said, you just gotta know what to do!

daemonire In reply to Temiree [2007-08-19 09:33:27 +0000 UTC]

Suuure that'll help me in a few years after i've had tons of practice... but I wanna be good nowwwwwwwwwwwww... it's no fair that I can't be piccasso without any practice, training or art schooling! WAHHHHH!

Pretending to whine amuses me sometimes. Anyway; being around DA and watching what other people (like y'self) do is a great experiance. I'm really picking up alot just by being observant... And hearing what you did to make changes really helps too! Sooo thanks for the great art and the education! (leeches off your talent) Mmm, talent...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Temiree In reply to daemonire [2007-08-19 19:26:55 +0000 UTC]

Yep, being observant about the real world and art has helped me. Observing how light and shadow reacts with things, happens to be automatically. It's hard to explain. xD Like I see a reflection on a car, and try to figure out how it gets there. It really helps with coloring.

And no problem, I guess. xD NOOO MY TALENT *runs*

weee *splash* :3 i think i seee the tail bit you left out (bottom right) x3? the water and back ground are they photos edited or drawn x3? they look half and half freaky xD. i hate it when pictures have lots and lots of layers and yo utreyo find one to edit it and you have like layer 12 layer 40 layer 36 layer 18 xD WHICH! ONE! xD but thats when i found out orgonisationl skills come in handy the picture is really great x3 especially the colorful and fluffy textures :3but the gray and colored bit do look a bit odd together x3 but nice mad skillz you have :3

Thanks! And I am glad the background comes off like a picture somewhat. ^^ That means my realism is getting closer and closer.
