A friend of mine recently suggested (I prefer challenged
) me to paint backgrounds other than landscapes. Basically, paint backgrounds with things that weren't directly created by nature. And it's true, a lot of my paintings follow the theme of character + landscape. There isn't a whole lot there that could be considered "man-made."I decided to take him up on his suggestionchallenge and painted something manmade. It took me a while to think of something interesting, but this is what I came up with. Looking through the eyes of a traveler who is being greeted by the first soul he has seen in days. It's been forever since I read Redwall, but I do remember plenty of journeys that characters went on, and I believe that inspired this. Perhaps this is the mountain range before Salamandastron. (if I got my Redwall geography messed up, go ahead and correct me
)And for once, I'm happy with how the fire came out!

This just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy. There was a painting at my grandma's house that I used to stare at for hours, just daydreaming. It was a night scene, of a lone blacksmith shop, lit by the fires within. This reminds me so much of that. I love the friendly greeting, I feel like I would really be welcome here. The lighting is really great, and the flames look nicely wind-blown.

Looks really good, you've got a nice variety of texture in this one. Although, I think the shadow of "Teddy" would be a little farther off to his left based on the location of the fire. Very nice work on the moon and the clouds. All-in-all it looks really good. =3

Ah, you're probably right. I'd fix it but unfortunately it'd require a lot of work since the layers are flattened. I'll keep a closer eye on it next time.

Aaww, such a sweet picture, with lovely atmosphere! Reminds me a bit of Redwall, too, whenever they end (and sometimes begin) with a kindly welcome to the abbey.
