When I looked at your gallery, I noticed that most of your deviations are portraits and your medium is pencils.

not bad.

All you need to do is before you apply the HARDCORE shades and shadows, study first the basic structure of your subject.

for example, when drawing a face of Sweeney Todd/Johnny Depp, observe the shape of his face (if it's round, chiseled, square, or long). observe the distinctive traits that the face has. does he have deep eyes, is his nose big or small, does he have big cheeck bones, strong jaw line etc. then lightly sketch it onto your paper. (I think you already know this though) anyway, it's better to use F types of pencils for sketching, then when you're done, apply carefully the shades and shadows using B type of pencils. personally, I prefer 3B - 6B. REMEMBER that the lighting is very important.

There are some that has good shading but bad lighting. which means, they know how to shade but don't understand the fall of light on the subject.

What I can suggest is don't be afraid to apply darker shades. good contrast is a great way to give your portrait the character, depth, and life.

LASTLY

PRACTICE! never quit until you think you've done your best. and when you think you've done best, GO FOR A HIGHER STANDARD!

I'll recommend an artist friend of mine. try to look at his works. and try to breakdown his technique on one of his works.

this is his account. I'm sure you'll be inspired.

OH and another thing. Don't think of the "better" drawings as an obstacle or something hard to reach or a frustration. Think of it as motivation!

I feel like a mentor.

I hope I've helped you (the right way). If you still have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

yeah.

I really use that for shading and for applying depth. but before I do that, I use HB or B or F to sketch first.

It's still up to you though if you're comfortable with it. If using graphite straight on is your thing, that's ok.

the important thing is, you like what you do!

Ummm, I think that would be impossible for me to tell you that because I don't know any shops there in UK.

As you may know, I'm from the Philippines.
