Description Sooo I guess this is my second attempt at River from the AWESOME TV series "Firefly"/Movie "Serenity" You can find the first here [link] Course it still doesn't look a thing LIKE River... but I darkened her hair. As a result of darkening her hair I felt that some of the layers were lost so I added a few highlights. I also made her eye smaller so it's not so "anime" looking which I didn't intend in the first place. I added a little shadowing under her eyes... to give her that more tired look. 'Cept now she looks a little drugged...I'm not sure whether I like this version better or not. It has its pros and cons. Meh. I need to move on.

Aww thank you! I definitely want to do more but I just suck so much at drawing real people so I am trying to work on that. Hopefully...eventually.

Aww thank you! I really hope I can get to a point where I can draw the characters to actually look like the actors more so maybe one day I'll make some improvements to this ^^

To help in the de-anime, definitely some figure studies and studies of the human body and features will do well. Trying to do realism will break the anime concept, and study of how light and shadow plays on facial features will help a lot. [link] being an example of how study of shapes rather than features will help. Draw the shadows and highlights, forgetting the aspect of 'this is an eye, these are lips, etc'.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I think there's something wrong with the link you sent. It keeps coming up with "file not found" Not sure if it's me though It's hard to de-anime my art since I've been doing it so long... and I don't have the time to practice or anything because of work. I miss drawing so much!

Its okay.

As for de-anime, yes, you along with a bunch of other people have this same problem, as you've literally worked yourself into a rut. It really will take some stringent effort to break it. I would suggest getting a sketchbook and drawing atleast one thing in it that is human related every day. Try to make them full pieces in your journal than just a quick sketch if you can, but draw daily.

I was hoping to use some tutorials online and actually follow my anatomy books for once so I coudl work on this, but my boss at work just decided that he wanted me to teach a superhero cartoon class... while the anatomy studies will stilll help I have to throw realism out the window so I can learn to draw superheroes and find some way to teach it to kids. Maybe it's just not meant to be haha.

Well the background was just to add a background... you should have seen the original background - that was terrible! Thanks for the comment! If only I could draw real people this would look like River so much more!

You know... I like it a LOT. It has a much darker feel to it. And the smaller eye with the shadowing gives her a kind of tired, dangerous look. I don't think she looks drugged at all. Or maybe only a very little. And that's not to say that looking drugged isn't totally canon anyways... ^_^

The new coloring scheme gave her some wicked depth in her hair. Seriously, I love.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I've grown to like it. The colors kind of change depending on what monitor I'm using to look at it due to settings and such but overall I think this is definitely more true to the character and such. Thanks so much!!

sororitysheep In reply to TerraForever [2006-03-28 03:40:47 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem. I agree, it's very true to the spirit of the character. ^_^

There's totally not enough Firefly/Serenity fanart anywhere. At least we're doing our part. ^_^

I realize this comment is from way forever ago, but I couldn't help but reply to it.

This girl is River Tam, a character from the canceled series Firefly and the major motion picture Serenity that spawned from the show. Although there are only 14 episodes, they are episodes of pure gold. The series and movie were written and directed by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and Angel [as well as writer of Toy Story]. I can honestly say that this is without a doubt the best show I have seen in my life. Unfortunately, FOX canceled it on favor of reality programs and baseball.

"The series is set in the year 2517, after humans have arrived at a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a Firefly-class spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things".

"The show explores the vicissitudes of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war, as well as the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In addition, it is a future where the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures as well. According to Whedon's vision, nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today." - Wikipedia.

I absolutely, 100% recommend this show. Of everyone I know who has seen it, not a single one is less than in love with it.

If you're interested, you can rent the box set from Netflix:

An even if you're not interested, rent it anyway.
