My entry for the "James and the Giant Peach" contest. I remember reading the book by Roald Dahl in 3rd grade and thinking it was wonderful. The movie came out when I was about 12 years old and I thought it was absolutely amazing. I mean...a movie that can make a young girl actually LIKE bugs has to be pretty good.

Tim Burton and Henry Selick continue to be some of the best in the business (as with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Coraline") and as anyone who browses my gallery can see their work has had an influence on my art.

This contest spoke to me in a way that said "At least enter SOMETHING! You will kick yourself if you don't!" Like the character James, I did not have a lot of friends growing up and I did live in an mentally abusive household. I often wished I had a place to escape to that was more fantastical then my bedroom with a door latch. To this day I daydream about places to go and things to see in hopes I may find somewhere worthy of matching the places my imagination has shown me, which may be what sparked my love for travel and road trip adventures, just driving to see where it takes me.

The picture here puts me in the character's place, but not on his same adventure. If I had a giant peach acting as my own airship tethered by hundreds of birds I'd definitely try to get some use out of it. The bugs....well, I loved James' bugs but I think I might just bring my cat along...she's not so slimy with too many legs....at least she would be amused by the birds. But, if I needed someone to talk to I suppose I could always slip her some magic crocodile tongues...

Method:Acrylic paint and Prismacolor pencil on 11 x 15 inch Bristol paper. Photoshop lens flare filter added in some places. No image references used (except for what I remembered in my head about the peach and the birds attached from the movie.)
