The almost resigned expression in the resting eyes, the desperation of the hands, with those taut tendons, barely deforming the vulnerable flesh, of the throat: so we defy ourselves every day, in the space between self and the illusion of it.
I was intrigued by the quote on your front page, about painting oneself. As a kid I was convinced by the great body of literature that, we only see ourselves most clearly through the eyes of others. And at the time I thought so, for the way I saw little disparate parts of my own truth replaying in the works of others. But out in the world, navigating the space between whom I know myself to be, and how I behave or appear, I know now that a private truth is always more clear, more real, than a million syncretic impressions.
Please keep painting yourself. I would be fascinated to watch your works develop and age with their artist. And I am most mindful of the privilege that represents.
Thank you for your art.
