Description
A new type of creature I created, featuring a wire armature for poseability, faux fur mane and tail, painted and sealed Super Sculpey legs, big eyes and real amber on the face and back. The rest is needle felted. With head raised, they stand about 20 cm (8 inches) tall.

Amberbacks are tall ungulate mammals that are best known for the amber-like formations that males and some females carry on their backs and heads. They are slightly taller than earthly horses, mainly due to their long maned necks and stick-like legs designed to travel the mud-covered grounds of their homeland. Their one toed hooves are small and grown into their bony legs, giving them little mobility. For this reason they aren't fast runners, but make it up with their great stamina. Amberbacks have big eyes and long furry necks and tails. Their skin, except from neck, tail and legs, is similar to plush velvet. They are generally easygoing creatures and are often used by the natives as mounts to cover long distances of mudlands.

Recent studies show that the stones for which amberbacks are known for have a chemical consistency close to that of real amber. Since their main food source are the branches and bark of a local resin-rich tree, it is assumed their bodies extract the resin and turn it into amber in a sped up process. Once the stone has grown too big, it usually falls off and a new stone will soon sprout. Amberbacks most likely use their amber stones to impress mates.
