Today's Hamster Drop update is a work in progress snapshot of Raye's idle animation.

The only things missing are the shading and the trampoline used to catch hamsters. I'm pretty sure the latter in the important one...

Seven individual frames drawn entirely in Photoshop CS6 Extended.

She's so cute! I think frame by frame animation is the best way to do 2D animation looks more natural and is more fun to do. I work that way also with my animations also in photoshop
You always inspire me to continue doing it that way whenever I have a reason to do 2D animations xD

Yeah love animation in photoshop. Glad it's now INSIDE of photoshop unlike back when I first had to do it inside of Image Ready when I used Photoshop 7.0 Lots of good improvements for many of adobe programs. At first when I realized there was no image ready I was like "NOOOOOOO!!!" and then I saw it was inside photoshop and I was like "oh. They just moved it inside"

Timing goes a long way with things like this. We have to use as few frames as possible while still having something lively.

By the way, how do you plan the movements?
I usually get to what I think is the end of an animation, only to find out that I have to keep adding frames in order for it to look right.

That usually comes down to honing your sense of timing. A trick to help with that is to voice out sound effects when you're playing back your animation. Anything from the sound of a foot tapping the ground to the sound of the characters clothes flapping in the wind.

Makes what you're doing feel more real.

Probably doesn't answer your question, but that's how I do it.

I've done enough loops to pretty much know how to get from the first frame to the last without too much redrawing. Imagining the sound helps a lot in those cases.

It's a choice to save on the amount of frames drawn.

The fewer frames used the less memory the game sucks up in the devices that it runs on.
The animation likely plays back slower in your browser than it does at game speed; it feels just right when you see it there.
