Description Before everyone gets upset, I know Edward is supposed to be a modified Furness Railway "Larger Seagull" K2 Class,
but the LNER "D Class" (NBR Reid Class K) locomotives appears to the basis behind Edward's Railway Series appearance, with large splashers, a full cab and the right proportions.

Sodor "historian" Martin Clutterbuck notes that Edward bears a close resemblance to that class and the Rev. Awdry apparently used this model to represent Edward on his model railway.

What do you think?

To me Edward is an LNER D41 class.

I like to think that he is a hybrid of a FR K2 and a LNER D Class or that after he saved James in Old Iron he got an upgrade rather than just an overhaul.

Nice Idea. Modified so he works more efficiently or have more commonly obtainable parts (like Gordon and Percy).

To be fair Awdry couldn't have a got a kit or a model of a K2 Larger Seagull class for his model railway and would have had to have settled for anything that looked similar with a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement.
This looks superb and might have been a better basis for Edward from the beginning however Awdry explained that Edward had been modified carefully over the years.
I guess that was to explain why he didn't quite look like the K2.

What if Edward was modified with LNER D Class parts and that's why he has a closer resemblance?

*shrugs*

I mean Percy doesn't look much like his basis as he was modified.

I do like how the Furness Railway is right next to Sodor, gives a bit of locational history for Edward.

Awdry had to come up with some interesting backstories for NWR engines 1-6 just to explain their unusual shapes.

1- modified
2- modified
3- got into a huge accident horribly disfigured, needs modification
4- threw a tantrum to get modified
5- modified after a wooden brake fire
6- likely was neglected before, so he needed everything redone

Bonus:
7- accurate
8- quackity quack quack

Yeah, I think it does bear a better semblance to Edward than the Furness railway class.
