Description March 2012

Yeah, this one has been sitting on the memory card for a while...

I crocheted this scarf for the teaching assistant in my Russian class who became very close friends with the Sailor and I. She was so willing to share extra language help and tell us about her culture. We were very sad to see her return to Russia, possibly never to see her again. Who knows when/if we will be able to go there or when/if she will be able to come back to the States? As a parting gift (one that blatantly played on the stereotypical coldness of her home country) I made her a scarf: ice blue, her favorite color. She loved it. Actually, I had no idea at the time I was making it, but this was the first handmade garment she had ever been given. It was, in her words, "unlike any other gift."

I hope that was supposed to be a good thing.

This is the nerdy little reason that makes me love crocheting so much. The cross cultural experience that can be had with just a few stitches and some spare time.

Okay, I'm done cheesin' it up. Bottom line: this may have been the most excited I have ever seen someone about something I've made them. She almost cried.

Crocheted with: Caron Simply Soft
Stitch pattern: "Cornflower stitch" (I think....)

She is just too cute- I wish I could have met her for real.
But that's so great that you made this for her, and I'm so glad that she loved it :]

I can't even begin to think of accepting any kind of amazing gift from you until I send my own! Good news, though. I FINALLY have a goox box to use, and I'm almost finished up. (Though it's been so long, I want to re-draw the original trade, since I've slightly improved since we started. )

where did you get the pattern from?, or did you come up with it yourself? It's really pretty.

I learned the stitch in the book called the Crochet Stitch Bible. Its a great book, and a great stitch.

Is the Cornflower stitch similar to shell stitch?

Very similar, it's a variation of the traditional shell stitch. I believe I found it in the Crochet Stitch Bible. Which, I might add, is a phenomenal book.

I love making gifts.

This stitch really looks like it makes the scarf flow nicely

it's very nice when you can get a nice drape with crochet. just single or double doesn't usually cut it. :/
