Description When I started doing those Supernatural chibis I was thinking of other stuff I could do a series of. There were some other shows and stuff I thought of but the most obvious other one was the Batverse. And after a suggestion and a stack of recent uploads by ~rickytherockstar it got my engine revving about doing it.

But as I was making my list of characters I realised how many of them had had different versions through the years. Especially Batman. It's pretty well documented how he had been re-designed from his first appearance to how he is today so that got me thinking of doing alternate versions as well. As a side thing to the main group sheets.

I was going to go through and do all the Batmans. The comic versions, the movie versions, the alternate reality versions etc etc but that was hard to define. Where goes in and what doesn't? So I just went with the main comic look stages.

Yes. They are some of my comic covers in the background.

Thanks so much.

Don't worry. I weird myself out all the time so I don't think anyone else could do it.

LOL I'm the same way. Very little really surprises me coming from other people - and yet, I find that I'm surprised by myself O_o. This is what life is like when you're a living paradox xD

HOLY SHIT THEY'RE SO CUTE I WANT TO STEAL THEM AND HUG THEM AND LOVE THEM AND SQUEEZE THEM AND TICKLE THEM AND

i love how he starts off all grumpy, gets suddenly happy, and then gradually falls back into grump mode it's almost as if he started taking happy pills but then got addicted and they ended up ruining him again... wait oh god that's what happened isn't it?! adam west was a vicodin trip!!

...seriously though, that last one... ...he just looks so saggy and GRUMPY.... the longer i look the harder i laugh X'DDDD

A Looney Toons reference on a Batman pic? My nerdal receptors can barely digest all that!

Well I could try and make some claims that Adam West wasn't drug induced giddiness...but who am I kidding. He sooooo was. I think if you drew a visual timeline for most golden age characters then you'd probably see the same thing. They all seemed to be smiling at winking in the 40s and 50s, and telling kids to buy war bonds, but then Frank Miller came along in the 80s and grumped everyone up. And now here we are.

Saggy? The fact you called him that is funnier than anything I could've drawn.

...i referenced looney toons? i know i watched it a lot as a kid but man, i can't even remember now...

well adam west WAS from the sixies

speaking of decades... hare's a handy breakdown of how comics differed through the years, using The Crimson Chin as a model (though idk what's up with the dates on the picture. or wha 1993 is supposed to be O_o): [link]
The 1930s Pulp Fiction Chin
The 1940s World War II Sergeant Chin
The 1950s Square-Jawed Commie Buster Chin
The 1960s Psychedelic Chin
The 1970s Disco Chin
The 1980s Overly Muscular Weapons
The 1990s Grunge Chin
The New Millennium Crimson Chin

I forget his name but there's a big dumb dog that talks like that. He'll pick up a little animal and go "I'm gonna hug him and squeeze him and pet him and love him."

That's the greatest timeline ever! It's scary in it's accuracy. I didn't know what those last two were supposed to be either. They kinda looked like The Tick. Maybe it has something to do with how everyone's gone back to wearing classic spandex.

well the character usually looks like this: [link] but i'm not sure why the 1993 one had a 5 o'clock shadow and sunglasses. though it does kinda make sense, considering comics in the mid nineties *coughARSENALcough*

I like how he's only happy in the one pose. In the rest he's the cold, stoic avenger we know him to be.

What is that, like, 1% of your comic book collection's covers?

That's because he was "lightened" up to be more kiddie friendly. But after that some writers came in and decided to get back to what he was about.

1%? Well...probably less than that.

I love mostly how the expressions change;
first he's pissed then he's happy then mildly annoyed then PISSED!!!

and how the whole way though his cape is pointed then suddenly he's all like 'dude my cape is not pointed' or maybe it is but I can't see.

and those comics in the background. Nice bro, love it

---

also totally not on the subject, I only have a vague understanding of Blackest night (as you probably know) but can I read Brightest day even though I did not read Blackest night?

I trust your judgment on these issues.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to crazypenguin09 [2010-05-01 06:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Well that's what he was like. First he was all serious, then they changed him to a smiling happy guy then each time he was redesigned he was made a bit more serious until he became the grumpy pants he is today. His cape definitely became more pointed at times. It was hard to decide how pointy to do it though because every artist did it differently.

Hmmm...I think you should be able to. You were able to read Flash #1 and understand it without reading Flash: Rebirth. I think Brightest Day is (at the moment) going to be more about the start of the next phase of the universe. I'd say Brightest Day will probably be more about all the other stories going on. Like the war with New Krypton and the return of Bruce Wayne and so on. Brightest Day would probably be a good place to start reading some comics anyways because it'll be like a fresh start.

what is the deal with new krypton anyway?

I thought all the kryptonians where dead and then I hear a bunch of them are on Earth chilaxin' and something about a new planted called Krypton (I guess that is new krypton) and Brainiac is al like 'oh no you didn't' and goes and tries to kill things and...

I have no Idea!

---

I just find it funny that batman can be totally badass even in his campy stage, he just whips out some bat-shark-repellent spray and those villains run in horror, screaming as they go

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to crazypenguin09 [2010-05-05 08:32:38 +0000 UTC]

It came from Brainiac. Brainiac goes around and miniaturises cities for his collection. One of the cities he had was of Kandor from Krypton. In a fight between him and Superman Kandor was turned back to full size and put next to the Fortress of Solitude. But all the Kryptonians in the city didn't like following Earth's rules so they built themselves a planet of their own and called it New Krypton. It's on Earth's orbit but on the opposite side of the sun.

And yes...Brainiac's not too happy about his trophy city being taken away.

Oh he was superbadass in those days. That awesome batmobile! All the computers in the batcave! All those gadgets he had!

He's been through some crazy phases. He went through some phase where he'd go into space to fight aliens. Flying in his Batspaceship, wearing his Batspacesuit.

And in the 60s Robin hated hippies.

The-G In reply to FastPuck [2010-04-27 22:38:26 +0000 UTC]

They may be virtually possible. I got this program for cataloguing comics and I'm in the process of entering all my babies into a database. And I think you can export the database into a html file...so I guess the collection could be looked at.

I just need to finish the rest off. I've only done a third and that worked out to be about 800 comics. So you can see the volume of stuff I'm working with here.

Well I DO doodle chibi Batmen quite frequently so I DO get a lot of practice.

Not all of them would batarang the fuck out of you. Those three in the middle weren't too violent. It's the ones on the ends you have to worry about. Those guys wouldn't bat an eyelid (pun intended) at messin' up some suckers.
