Description Monster: Ankylotherium
Kaiju Number: 12

Height: 60 meters
Length: 200 meters
Mass: 73,000 tons

Year of First Appearance: 2012
Origin: Equinox Labs, Australia
Alignments: Earth Kaiju

Running Speed: 250 MPH

Powers & Abilities:
- Clubbed Tail: Much like the prehistoric Ankylosaurs, Ankylotherium’s tail is tipped with an extremely hard, bone club. This is his primary defensive weapon and can be swung with enough force that it can shatter the bones of weaker opponents and even fracture the bones of stronger beasts such as Rosie.
- Armor: Protecting Ankylotherium’s body is an extremely thick, armored carapace capable of withstanding heavy fire and physical blows.
- Gore: While not a unique power since almost any monster with a horned head is capable of mimicking it, Ankylotherium is capable of delivering the most devastating gore in all of the kaiju-dom, using his six horns, speed, and great weight to bulldoze his opponents.

Weaknesses: None

Threat Level: Low – Ankylotherium may very well be the calmest kaiju in all of existence. He tends to shy away from populated areas and only attacks when provoked and threatened, something humanity is smart enough not to do. Since he also feeds on vegetation, he rarely ever ventures too close to civilized areas, only doing so if a population resides within his territory and is attacked by an invading monster.
Intelligence: Ankylotherium has about as much intelligence as a modern rhino. He knows when he is threatened and how to utilize his tail and gore, but that’s about it.
Diet: Unlike most kaiju who feed either on meat (IE: humans) or some sort of inorganic material (such as rock), Ankylotherium is one of the few, true herbivore kaiju. He can often be found grazing on grasslands and chewing on entire trees.

History: In 2012, the second age of kaiju had started. New monsters were on the rise and a company known as Equinox sought to develop marketable weapons to combat the insurgence of beasts. In the outback of Australia, a secret laboratory was constructed and brilliant scientists went to work, including a man by the name of Dr. Rudolph Ackert. Delivering prehistoric DNA samples to the Equinox labs, Jonathan Henz sought to spearhead a new market that would soon be dominated by the A.K.D.F.

The DNA samples he brought the laboratory belonged to the prehistoric animals Tyrannosaurus Rex, Ankylosaurus, and Uintatherium. The DNA itself was recovered deep within fossilized bones by forensic technology. The scientists launched two programs to develop anti-kaiju kaiju for Henz, Inc: Gorgs and Ankylotherium. While Gorgs would be created by gene-splicing the T-Rex with various species of lizard, namely thorny devil and bearded dragon, Ankylotherium was a true prehistoric chimera composed of Ankylosaurus and Uintatherium. Despite the success with Ankylotherium, Gorgs was to be the true star, the herbivore merely created to show that they were also able to create non-violent monsters. However, the Gorgs creature proved too violent and powerful to be controlled.

The gigantic theropod broke free of its restraints and demolished the complex, devouring all of the scientists and workers stationed there at the time. Ankylotherium, still not fully grown at this point, managed to survive and escape into the wilderness while Gorgs went on the hunt, growing in size as it trekked across the dry outback.

The A.K.D.F. was alerted and called in, but Henz, Inc. and Equinox failed to tell them about the second escapee Ankylotherium. The forces took chase, following the trail of carnage left by the quickly growing Gorgs. Soon the dinosaur-lizard hybrid reached Sydney, feeding on fleeing civilians and shrugging off the puny weapons firing upon his scaly body. It was hopeless. Without Taninim, the human forces were defenseless against such a ruthless, predatory monster!

However, Ankylotherium suddenly appeared within the city. Confused by the sudden appearance of another monster, Dr. Melissa Silver could only theorize that the thing had claimed this territory as its own. While the humans were too small and weak to pose a legitimate threat, the super predator did. Ankylotherium displayed a show of power, digging his large feet into the ground and pounding the ground with his clubbed tail, making the streets crater and surrounding windows blowout.

The T-Rex kaiju howled in defiance, but his distraction allowed numerous people to seek shelter from the ravenous killer. Gorgs charged with a gigantic stride, jaws wide open. In a surprising show of speed, Ankylotherium’s tail lashed out, striking the dinosaur’s left ankle! A sickening crack was followed by a high-pitched scream from the king of the dinosaurs. He fell back, leg throbbing in pain. The armored juggernaut grunted, pounding the streets again with his tail.

Weakly, Gorgs squirmed to his feet. The dinosaur snarled and leaped, careful not to put too much weight on his wounded ankle. Ankylotherium’s tail swung out again, but Gorgs ducked the blow and his jaws launched downward, teeth sinking into the unarmored side of the goliath. Yanking his head back, Gorgs tore free a bloody chunk of gray flesh. Swallowing it with haste, Gorgs’ head lashed downward for more! Just as its jaws came within inches of the ugly wound, Ankylotherium’s tail swung out again.

A hammer-like blow to the side of Gorgs sent the dinosaur staggering, crimson streams falling from his nostrils and jaws. The beast fell back, reeling in pain and slumping into the side of a nearby building. The structure gave way, sending an avalanche of carnage down upon the vicious reptile. A mushroom cloud of dust drifted higher into the sky as Ankylotherium watched the rubble settle.

After nearly two minutes, the thick cloud began to dwindle. Gorgs remained in the rubble, squirming. Coughing up blood, Gorgs groaned. His reptilian eyes locked on Ankylotherium as the brute’s forelimbs began to dig into the streets, creating trenches large enough to hold entire platoons of soldiers. Lowering his horned head, Ankylotherium charged forward.

Realizing what was about to happen, Gorgs rolled onto his belly and leaped away, crying in pain as he put too much weight on the broken ankle. Ankylotherium’s gore missed completely; instead he bulldozed through the rubble and struck another, smaller building! The structure exploded like glass, raining chunks of car-sized debris and glass upon the surrounding city streets. The rhino-like beast shook rubble from his armored form and turned to face his foe, but Gorgs charged forward on all fours! His dangerous jaws came down on the herbivore’s leg!

The quadruped monster lashed out with his clubbed tail again, hammering the hard object down upon Gorgs’ back! The reptile’s jaws released the limb and screamed in agony. Flipping over with all limbs flailing, Gorgs was helpless as Ankylotherium lowered his horned head. Charging, the juggernaut gored Gorgs! The dinosaur’s body was pushed forward and lifted off the ground, his entire body battered. He was pushed down the destroyed city street, limbs and tail cutting a path of destruction in the surrounding buildings.

Soon Ankylotherium ran out of street and plowed Gorgs into the base of another building, blowing out every window in an instant. A plume of gray and white dust spread outward as the five-story building caved in, collapsing onto Gorgs’ twitching body. Ankylotherium smashed his tail into the upturned street, making devastated vehicles and boulder-like rubble bounce into the air. Severely wounded, Gorgs managed to stir in the mound of destruction, dozens of cuts and gashes now adorning his scaly hide.

Growling, the king of the super predators shook his head. His beady eyes looked up at Ankylotherium with contempt. The brute’s tail came down again, targeting his head and seeking to put a final end to the war. Gorgs rolled to the side and leaped away, but came down with a heavy thud as his ankle gave way, making the beast scream once more. The titan’s eyes watched Ankylotherium slowly turn around, tail looming over his head. His eyes then looked down upon his ankle… it was now completely busted, bone emerging from the side of his foot!

Gorgs squirmed and growled. He was now unable to escape or fight back, but as Ankylotherium closed the distance, the giant began to slow. The beast began to shake his head. His four legs began to wobble and tail fell with dead weight, pummeling the demolished remains of a fallen building. Ankylotherium wasn’t aware of it, but his ferocious opponent was equipped with a bacterial bite, and now that bacterium was coursing through his body! The giant collapsed to the side, eyes sunken deep in his skull.

Gorgs snorted, pushing with all his strength to weakly climb to his feet. He nearly collapsed as he limped to the fallen Ankylotherium. Looming over his fallen victim, Gorgs placed his broken foot onto the beast’s armored back and roared into the smoky sky, his trumpeting sound echoing throughout the entire city! Gorgs, the destructive monster, had won! Once again, Sydney was helpless.

Or so the population believed.

Descending from the swirling clouds, numerous helicopters began to drop canisters upon the dinosaur. The drums of chemicals drifted down with white parachutes, releasing white gas when they fell by his boxy skull. Gorgs was soon rendered unconscious by the gas, collapsing into a heap onto the fallen Ankylotherium.

Both monsters remained unconscious for days, kept so by a steady flow of tranquilizer by the forces, along with massive amounts of ice to keep Gorgs’ temperature down. The monsters were transported to the Kaiju Reservation in Africa, the first of many monsters to be moved there. With such a vast amount of land and supply of food, neither posed a threat to humanity for the moment, and each also set up territories. While Gorgs sometimes engaged Ankylotherium, he would forever be much more cautious when approaching the armored juggernaut.

In the coming months, more monsters were added to the Kaiju Reservation, including the Gnattra, Stryker, and Scorpadon. The only herbivore monster, Ankylotherium often found himself engaged with the likes of Scorpadon whom also wished to devour him. Fortunately, the behemoth proved too tough for the ion mutant to successfully kill. However, a new force from beyond the stars sought to conquer the Earth! The Klenthurians arrived with an armada of warships. In order to secure a victory, Saberon Tchove ordered the destruction of the Kaiju Reservation and the beasts within it.

The monster Rosie and a resurrected, cyberneticly enhanced Thresher were unleashed upon the reservation! In the battle, Ankylotherium participated against the destructive, walrus-like Rosie. It was a brutal battle, but not even Ankylotherium could withstand the impressive might of the Klenthurian gladiator! His powerful tail managed to land several successful blows, even fracturing one of the goliath’s arms and cracking several ribs, but the pain mattered not for the abominable great white walrus.

After Ankylotherium managed to gore Rosie off of his feet, the furry kaiju quickly recovered. He caught the clubbed tail in mid-swing and dragged the armored beast closer. Wrapping his arms around Ankylotherium back and sides, the walrus hoisted the heavy beast into the air, pointing his lengthy tail up and head down! He then piledrived the beast head-first into the ground, knocking the brute out completely!

Rosie stood up tall amongst a ruined field of broken kaiju. They not only defeated the Kaiju Reservation, but also made a powerful statement to humanity. Never before had human eyes witnessed such manhandling of monsters! The A.K.D.F. fought back against the Klenthurians and eventually won, but the Kaiju Reservation would never be the same. While the beasts recovered from their wounds, the forces used this time and victory to begin planning a new habitat for the monsters. The answer was an island paradise roughly the size of the state of Pennsylvania. An island in the Pacific that was once used for mining in the 1930’s through the 1950’s.

The island was a perfect match for the monsters and soon Genesis Island was completed. The beasts of the Kaiju Reservation were relocated to this new home. Still alive after his defeat at the hands of Rosie, Ankylotherium created a new territory on the grassy plains. Soon he’d be joined by other pacifist, herbivore monsters such as Girafrica and Coccinelia. While other predators often challenged Ankylotherium, all of them eventually learned the hard way that he was off the menu.

Comments by MM: One of my oldest of kaiju. He was made years ago at ’s Arena. I had always liked the idea of a true Ankylosaurus kaiju that wasn’t predatory or “sharp” (like Anguirus), but instead relied on 100% brute force. To keep his appearance from being too similar to Anguirus’, I incorporated rhino and Uintatherium traits, giving him much more of a mammalian appearance. His name was also decided to be a combination of Ankylosaurus and Uintatherium. In translation, his name means “Rigid Beast”.

When he was made, he was to appear in Kaiju Origin Tales 2 as the alpha of an entire herd of Ankylotherium in Africa, spawned by a meteorite that infected rhinos. However, this story didn’t get far off the ground and Ankylotherium remained as an “unknown” member of my roster. At the same time, I had do a picture of good ole’ Anky in an art trade, which you can see here: [link] .

As expected, this idea of a herd of Ankylotherium didn’t stick when MM’s World started up years ago. His origin was re-tooled to be that of a man-made dinosaur, a sort of homage to Jurassic Park. I made him the rival of the predatory Gorgs. Some have asked e why I don’t use him more often, and the reason is simple: Anguirus.

While I wanted (and needed) an armored juggernaut, I don’t want to rip off the Godzilla series too much. Ankylotherium comes in handy at times (and will be during the final conflict of WWK), the Anguirus role is filled by King Claw, whom shares Anguirus’ trademark “never say die” attitude and loyalty (to Taninim, MM’s World’s 1970’s era Godzilla).

I choose to update and retool parts of Ankylotherium’s design recently simply because I could no longer stand looking at my horrid, original picture of him from years back: [link] . I’m very glad choose to draw him ([link] ) during a recent art trade because the picture gave me some great new ideas, including larger claws on the feet, opposed to smaller toes and claws. I am VERY happy with this new picture.

As a fan of big, armored dinosaurs of various sorts, I can say with confidence that this is a very pleasing monster in the least. Dare I say, the only ankylosaur kaiju I know of? Yes, yes it is. And he doesn't disappoint. This guy and Trickerak should go to the bar and share a mug, get drunk, and break something. That is my wish, Ak out ~w~

He is indeed quite the fresh herbivorous kaiju, something you don't see terribly much. I like him.
