Description

Mean, smelly, dumb, misogynist...Sounds a lot like internet trolls.

OVERVIEW

Though they appear big and monstrous, trolls are more genetically similar to humans than elves are. Like humans, they cannot wield magic. But unlike humans, they revel in all things ugly and disgusting. They are known to smear themselves with animal dung the way use humans use perfume, food tastes better to them when it's rotten, and they take pride in how many flies they can attract.

Trolls live in dark, smelly subterranean societies. They are known to farm mushrooms and a special breed of pig called a "tunnel hog". These are their main food staples, but they have also been known to lure sentient peoples like satyrs into their tunnels with promises of food. Once their prey is fattened to immobility, the trolls will feast on them.

Outside of their tunnels, trolls are widely met with disdain. They are considered dirty, unintelligent, and violent. However, plenty of trolls who decide to leave their tunnels find success in other societies. They commonly find work as vendors, body guards, and laborers.

BIOLOGY

There are two breeds of troll: the Hukus and the Skadgrik. The Skadgrik are less common, native only to Halostira and the northernmost mountains of Noalen. They have more body hair and fat than the Hukus, with big bulbous noses, horns, and yellow eyes. Hukus trolls can be found almost everywhere else on Looming Gaia, with flat noses, less hair, and reddish eyes.

All trolls have rough, leathery skin that doesn't pierce easily. Adults average at 500 pounds. They have enormous feet and hands both equipped with strong claws which they use for digging. Females have smaller tusks than males. The natural troll lifespan is just 60 years.

TROLL SOCIETY

Trolls traditionally live a very misogynistic way of life. Females are seen as commodities with no say in who they marry. That decision is up to their suitor, who must get permission from her fathers and brothers first. Males can have as many wives and children as they are able to feed. In troll society, males are valued by how much they do, while females are valued by how much they don't do.

Males are expected to feed their wives to the point of immobility. Their children will then care for her when he is away gathering more food. Males with thin or working wives are shamed for being bad providers. Females work as diggers until they become immobile, and then they become craftswomen who make things like baskets, beer, and tools to be traded to outsiders.

Single males remain digging and farming. They do not choose their profession--that's up to their chief. Trolls are known to kill and cannibalize each other over petty disagreements, and the biggest and strongest male becomes chief. He will remain the chief until another troll challenges him in battle and kills him.

Female trolls who escape their tunnels often find harmony living with ogres, who instead treat the males as objects. Trolls and ogres are similar in strength and tolerance to filth, so it's not uncommon to find merged "trogre" societies.
