Description
Drawn in November of 2008 with graphite pencils.The box is 6 by 6 inches.
This project was a total learning experience! I really enjoyed it. I shuddered when she first brought up an abstract drawing. After what I had seen in museums as 'abstract' art, I was wary of what was to come.
This however, has shown me that there can be 'fine' abstract work. I know some of you will disagree with me, but I just don't see scribbles or a circle painted on a canvas as 'fine art' Lol. Anyways, about this.
The one day I showed up late for class was the day we started this. I got the most un-interesting, ugly view of the still life! This weird cone thing, covered in wood circles and dry leaves, almost directly in front of a mini tree thing. SO LAME. XD
So, since she wanted us to emphasis abstract, I used that to my advantage and made it pretty cool looking. BD
We can get this out of the way too. Yes, I realize that it reminds some of you of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'. That has been established. [:

Haha, I love the concept. It looks kind of normal at a first glance, but then you realize everything is all "wrong". You did an amazing job with the shading and texturing. I love the composition too, especially the square frame.

and the leaves in the background look like wood sorta, so like dead trees, but IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE!!!

First of all, I totally agree with you about the whole dot on a canvas BS. It's shit. I am an art major and going to eventually get my Masters so I can teach art on a college level, and I am definetely going to emphasize the fine arts, not the "modern" art where people put a dot on a canvas, or, get this- I acutally went to a show once where the person had a couple of different canvas's hanging up, and one was entirely blank. Completely BLANK!!! The one next to it had a small bird feather taped to it. NO JOKE!!! It was at the "Contemporary Art Museum" in Denver. Anyway, I love your take on abstraction, it actually required quite a bit of skill to pull that off, and I love the way you chose to extend your composition outside of the box, it really adds to it. I also love the attention to detail, it looks immaculate, like you didn't make a mistake on the whole thing! I usually end up drawing something to dark that isn't proportioned correctly, so I keep having to erase it and then I end up with my paper all crappy looking. Anyway, Love the values and overall this is really just a kick ass piece!!! Keep it up!!!
