Spam! Also, feel free to skip all this text ahead.The ice he's sitting on is pretty shabby.
Another OC this time, Issac, a raven, just kind of chillin' (no pun intended
). I had to do a lot of research for his physical disability. I'm trying to make him not be able to talk without being deaf (which would actually be awesome, too). So I gave him what's called Aphonia."Basically, any injury or condition that prevents the vocal cords, the paired bands of muscle tissue positioned over the trachea, from coming together and vibrating will have the potential to make a person unable to speak. If the vocal folds cannot meet together to vibrate, sound will not be produced."
How they got damaged (bilateral damage on the recurrent laryngeal nerves) is a whole different story. This has also affected his ability to breathe and he gets really breathless fast and can sometimes even suffocate or hyperventilate if he exerts himself too much. Or something like that.
Either way, he talks through sign language. Lol. And sleeps a lot. But you can speak to him and he hears you just fine.

Aphonia? That's really sad.. ; n ; I only know of one other disorder that would make someone unable to speak-- which would just be "muteness" in general (but it's usually from a form of social anxiety, so I guess it wouldn't fit too well XD;; )

...I guess I never explained it totally out loud to you. LOL. But I remember telling you that if I just damanged his vocal cords, he'd get this really hoarse or breathless voice rather than actually lose it altogether.
...I think, to put it simply, the laryngeal nerves are what makes the vocal cords vibrate? I just know that bilateral damage to them can cause Aphonia.

Rambling is fine! (At least for someone like me who loves to ramble and read other people's rambles when they're about the pic or the character; absolutely fascinating. :3) And that is quite an interesting explanation. (I actually just had my character who can't speak be born without vocal chords, which is apparently possible but not common. Thought I'd point that out in case you were still having issues with the idea of being mute but not death. I like yer explanation way better. xD)
Anyway, the background and him look really good! The ice looks like ice to me, so you've succeeded. xD Very cool~

Yeah, it wasn't until last night while posting this picture that I found out my troubles could be made a lot simpler just by that one word 'Aphonia'. Before that I just had this wall of text while trying to explain it in other terms. Yours is interesting, too. I didn't know that was possible!
