Description Green shore crab (Carcinus maenas)
from DΓΊn Laoghaire Harbor.

(very large full view. double click image)

Maybe not the largest I have ever caught but certainly the most handsome little fellow.

These guys are rather prolific and considered an invasive species pretty much every where, I personally love them, and they are native to my part of Europe so as far as I am concerned they can continue scuttling around for as long as they like.

Caught using raw chicken, onion netting and hemp rope.

He's Greeeeeeeen! ANd a superb specimen.
I only remember little crabs from the beaches, but you caught this one....In a net?
Is he a deep sea one then?
I agree with you, long may they scuttle.
Corny and obvious, but I couldn't eat something that I've seen alive. I don't even like pulling leaves off a basil plant.
He looks very happy, like he's waving.

I tie a bit of meat to the end of a piece of twine, they come out grab it and are too stubborn to let go. you can just pull them right out. the onion netting wrapped round the chicken was because after a few dips in without it they have the meat torn to shreds and it just falls off.

Great craic.
I do like running around at low tide and turning over rocks and catching prawns in my hands and stuff but the tide was too high at this point so I used the string.
He was thrown back, We found one edible crab but he was too small, yet still bigger then this guy

The little ones don't grab the meat, i think they know the big crabs would eat them and it if they did...
I've seen things i've eaten alive.
doesn't bother me too much. not if I kept them as a pet that would be weird. but in a pinch i think i could still do it. There's a lot of meat on my cat if the time ever comes

Thank you, I almost just called it by it's scientific name, which wouldn't have made for such an entertaining photo at all
No matter what Shakespeare said, there is a lot in a name

Awwieee! Is just I was in Ireland last year, in Doonbeg, and I fell in love with a baby crab, one of my friends took it in his hands and it was oooo cute, I took a pic of it (if you want to see it it's in my gallery in the Ireland album) and this shot made me remeber that, this fella is absolutely handsome and fantastic shot!
