Description A watercolor illustration of my cockatiel Asa - the original image I used for reference was of Asa climbing around on my scarf hanger. I used that as inspiration for the abstract designs in the background. Because Asa is a white-faced lutino cockatiel with no patterning, I put a lot of color and pattern into the background to use his white feathers as a focal point. I still gave him a faint cheek patch, because those thin feathers over his ear do form a visible circle in the right lighting.

Birds make such cute quirky family members. Life would not be as exciting without my two feathered babies ^_^

Yes, Asa's an albino (or as close as a cockatiel can get to one). Aw, albino budgies are adorable

Hey there from !

My, this is a neat deviation!  The colourful and abstract patterns of the background reflecting the pure and simple whiteness of the cockatiel parrot Asa is an interesting style choice.
And it was very creative of you, fellow deviant, to use your scarf hanger as inspiration for this deviation. However, though this whole piece is beautiful to look, you don't want to look at it
for too long since the multitude of colours can really tire the viewer's eyes. I'd suggest that the background would be a little less rich in saturation, for now it draws too much attention from Asa.

Regardless, Asa is still set well not too much into the center, but a little more to the left, thus making the deviation look lively and not staged.
Also, the amount of detail that went into the colourful scarves shows that the artist doesn't lack skill.

Thank you for the feedback I understand what you mean with the bright saturated colors. I might plan a more limited color palette next time.

Hey there! I really like this piece. I actually like that you kept the cockatiel simple with minimal detail. Since the background is so intricate, there is a nice pop and contrast with the bird. Which appears to have been what you intended   I also think the hint of details on the cheek patch is a nice touch to make sure the bird isn't too plain so to speak.I really love the fun colors that you selected and all the cool details in the background wrapping around the bird.

I think that is something you could actually play with further. Since the bird is the focal point, you could play with leading the eye around the background starting from the bottom right hand corner which comes up above the birds head than diagonally to the bottom left side wrapping back around. Not sure if that makes any sense haha But kinda like this so it swirls into the center to where the bird it.
                                                       bbba
                                                      b  d   a
                                                    b BIRD a {Start}
                                                  b cccccd

You could play with the contrast and value of each color in the background or maybe even be a little more selective with the color harmony to add a little more of a punch. Maybe super bright colors on the outside and fading into duller colors on the inside? Just an idea haha

Anyways this came out great Sorry for the rant!

I think I get what you mean. Thanks for all the fun ideas   Don't worry, it didn't really seem like a rant. I've never gotten the knack for guiding the visual line in a picture, but there's always more to play with in the future.

This is amazing! It looks like patchwork and photo manips put together yet it is a painting! The background detail is outstanding! I can tell it is a cockatiel. However, I think it could use a little more plumage detail. It's a little difficult to tell our feathered friend here is feathered, it seems more like a coloring book page on that aspect.

Keep up the wonderful work!

Hi! I found your piece through projectcomment.deviantart.com

The piece of artwork is very colorful, and nice with the shapes. Such as the scarves all around have lots of color and shapes. It actually adds something colorful to the artwork. However, all of it is great, but the bird feels empty of certain details. It lacks the shapes the background have. Maybe if the details go into the feathers and such, the artwork would look fantastic.
So overall, it looks great, just needs more details in the bird.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback I intended Asa to be blank as contrast to the background, but I may have gone a bit extreme. I can see how it would have benefited from more patterning.

TheBlindAlchemist In reply to The-Wandering-Bird [2016-06-09 15:26:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure it was the same kind of bird, but his head was yellow and he had two orange spots, but his body was white.

The-Wandering-Bird In reply to TheBlindAlchemist [2016-06-09 18:49:00 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a lutino cockatiel. Asa is the same kind of bird, he just doesn't have any pigment in his face or body (the little circle on his face is where the orange spot would be if he was colored).
