Oh, sorry to make you wait. Well, to make Glitch wait, probably more sorry for that. It's my birthday today. Well, yesterday technically. So maybe Glitch will forgive me?
Butterflies:
I was maybe six years old when my sister first discovered that in the boring rural landscape of North Carolina, walks on weed were more fun with company.
So we went. Out to a playground across a field of wildflowers, violets and dandelions and such, and she'd be smoking up on the playground swings as I examined the flora (wanted to catalogue like the little scientist I was? More likely wanted a princess bouquet to gift the parents), and so I'd wander off. I played a game, tried to come close, look at the fauna, the wasps, the butterflies. Take one gently by the wing, then let it go. Caught one, once.
This is fixed in my memory, the image of the butterfly - a cabbage-colored one, incidentally - with these creeping feelers, these long, slender legs, a furry little head. And it began to move its insectoid appendages just as a spider would, brushing delicately over my hand. Disgusting. Let it go, of course, immediately, but I wished I hadn't gotten a closer look. Life lesson, there.
Not much of a story, but somehow these unremarkable moments are memorable. Then I went to my sister, scared and puzzled, and she shared a package of Andes Mints with me on the slide, and that cheered me right up as sweets do. So it goes

Wow - clearly a memory that has remained vivid and affecting for you. My irrational fear is spiders, but I find butterflies fascinating - their complexity, the amazing mechanisms of those pheromone-sensing antennae...
I think Glitch just likes them because of all the pretty colours, but I could be wrong
