Description Finally finished this one. It's 24" by 30", acrylic on linen, commissioned By Ramada Inns.
This is a stately manor-house in my town, not far from where I live. It's based on a reference photo I took a couple of months ago: [link]

Cool! It's a pretty popular place for weddings. I didn't think of it when I got married - I got married in an art gallery.

Thank you so much! The lady who ordered it never came back for it, so I've stuck it in the window with a sales tag on it. D:

humm.. i wonder why people do that! it must be very frustrating after spendng so long painting it ands its such a beautiful picture too! xx

If it had been a portrait, I'd have been pretty upset, but I imagine this one won't last very long. But I wouldn't have painted it in the first place if she hadn't placed the order.

yeah i guess portraits would be a lot harder to sell in those circumstances! good luck selling this one xx

Is it me or did you use smaller brushstrokes with this one? It is very stunning nonetheless, love those details on the building (:

theancientofdays In reply to Razkall [2008-08-23 11:00:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! It's you. This is a whopper, so it looks like the strokes are teensy, but the detail in this one is not nearly what it is in my small watercolours. It looks pretty "sketchy" up close.

Oh Chris, this is such a wonderful work. The first i saw you made in acrylics.

Thanks! I'm not very comfortable with acrylics, so it took a while longer than it should have.

You do not need to work in acrylics - your skills in watercolour are amazing!

Aw, thanks! I usually try to do the work in whatever medium the client wants, but I try to talk them into watercolour.

Thank you so much! There are a few homes like this around here, but this one is pretty famous locally because some big politician used to live there. They rent it out for weddings and stuff now.

It's a nice house, for a smaller home. It's kind of like a museum now - they rent it out for weddings and stuff. Very much the old-fashioned Southern plantation style. Glad you like it!

Oh! I'm so glad you finished it!! I remember seeing the reference picture, and since then I've been wondering when you were going to post it! And now I get to see it!
It came out so beautifully, and it looks just like the reference picture! Everything looks so realistic! Outstanding job!

Thank you so much! This was pretty tough - I'm not entirely comfortable with acrylic, so I may try again in watercolour to see if I can do any better. It's in the front window at the gallery, and a few people have asked about it, so I think I'll shoot prints.

Chris this is bloody amazing i thought it was the photograpg of what you were going to do, i'm totally gobsmacked with this

theancientofdays In reply to Dabull04 [2008-08-15 21:29:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, thank you very much! This one sure took a long time, and in a medium I'm not particularly comfortable with. I had to try to do well with it because it's a local landmark no one has painted before (so prints are going to be important) and pleasing a corporate client is pretty important, too. Thank you very much for the kind words!

Dabull04 In reply to theancientofdays [2008-08-15 21:33:38 +0000 UTC]

Well i think they are going to be pretty much head over heels with this one, you have really captured the building, i honestly did think it was a photo at first, i had to look twice, for a medium you say your not comfortable with you have really excelled

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to Dabull04 [2008-08-16 08:24:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I hope they'll be happy with it; I've already had a few people asking about it, so I guess I'd better get busy shooting prints.

theancientofdays In reply to Dabull04 [2008-08-20 10:06:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, that would be nice. I think the prints will do pretty well around town. There isn't a lot of art of the local attractions apart from the statue in the square, so I was excited to do something recognisable and local.
