Description This is a big grey teddy bear. I've made a lot of bears over the years - about 200 or so. The majority of those teddy bears were given to fire brigades, child-welfare agencies and police stations so that they could be given as gifts to children suffering a loss of some kind. The big grey teddy was a gift to my lovely and talented wife when we first started dating. I give him a lot of credit for helping me land her.
He's about 24" (61cm) tall, and I designed that particular pattern myself. He's hand-stitched.

EDIT: I've been asked by a few people about the lack of eyes. As maudlin as it sounds, the truth is that I feel very paternal toward the bears, and I don't want them to have to see the evil in the world. They don't have eyes because I want to protect them.

In My Opinion... And this is only my opinion... I think that the joy of comforting a child in times of need would overpower the 'seeing of evil' They get to watch the child grow and stuff...

I think it's cute anyway. <3

Still, he's very cute!

Beautiful. I like the fact that it has no eyes, and your reason for that. You're quite the well-rounded artist!

Thanks! I do a lot of sewing; quilts and clothes and all kinds of stuff. I never really thought of it as "art" while I was doing it, but I suppose there is a certain art to it, particularly in designing the patterns.

About time I faved it. x3

How did you first learn to make bears?

Thanks very much! Well, I started sewing back when I was really poor; I had been in hospital for a long time, and was trying to find something productive to do while I was recuperating. My daughter wanted a Snow White costume for Halloween, so a gave it a try, not realising that I wasn't supposed to be able to do it. After that came quilts and hats and bears and clothes...

Well, thanks! I used to give piles of these bears away to the police and fire brigades; I really wish I had the time to continue making them. Maybe once the commission work slows down a bit.

Thats nice. I wish I knew how to make bears. I'd give them away too. It'd be fun

theancientofdays In reply to TwistidGorillaz [2007-06-20 08:49:05 +0000 UTC]

It's really pretty easy! I always sew them by hand, and the trick is just to keep the stitches really tiny. I started out years ago with a pattern, but I kept changing it around and now it's nothing like it was at first.

I sew by hand too, but I'm not so good. I always sewing big gaps. I should sew smaller, it looks like it works

Chris, I simply love your teddy bears! And, personally, the faceless bears are comforting to me....don't know why, but it comforts me. I wouldn't like them with eyes.

You have my upmost respect with sewing these by hand! I do not have the patience required to even attempt such a thing. I do know how to sew, and have sewn many things, but I get so bored doing them that I usually do a sloppy and careless job on them. I use the machine for when I quilt, and use quick techniques to get them done in half the time. Even still, I have many quilts left undone! So much respect from me to you!

I know that you usually give these to charities, but how much would you charge for them? I love these faceless bears of yours. They are so comforting, even in a photo! I also find your reasoning for leaving them faceless very understandable. Your wife is one lucky gal!

Gee, thanks! I'm overwhelmed! I've lost the pattern, but I think I could probably wing it pretty well. I tried to sell a few, but they sold poorly because even at US$20 (which I thought was pretty reasonable for a hand-made bear) people said they were too expensive. D:

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-01-16 11:50:06 +0000 UTC]

I think $20 is pretty reasonable as well. I'm surprised people found it too expensive! What with the cost of materials and then the time to handstitch it all.......that price sounds quite reasonable. Perhaps the people didn't know it was handstitched? That could change their perspective.

I'll keep this in mind as I would love to have one of your bears. Right now I can't swing it, but in the future I would like one. Christmas and vacation has cleaned us out. You know how it is for most American families this time of year.

You're not kidding! We shelled out grandly over the holidays, so now I'm desperately trying to replenish the account! I keep saying I'm not going to be quite as generous this year, but the temptation to go overboard is really awfully strong!

You know what? This year we REALLY scaled down on the spending for gifts, but then we went to MI for vacation. That's what drained us this year.

Ah, so the Michiganers got all your dough! Pepper and I are really not very thrifty, but then, that's what money's for! We're trying to plan a holiday this year - She wants to go to NYC and I want to go to New Zealand. We've both decided that the other's holiday destination is the pits.

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-01-25 00:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, guess you best think of a new destination!

Yup, the Michiganders got all our money! But that's okay - at least it was Michigan! Michigan people help other Michigan people. (Poor attempt at justification! )

That guy took about two or three hours, I think. I usually cut out the pieces for several bears at once, and then do a bunch of sewing and stuffing. It goes pretty quickly with a little practice!
