Description Some of you have probably seen this one before. It's a scene I did as a commission last year. I think I did pretty well; for landscapes and scenery, I've found that I really need to be in the "mood" to paint well, and after I completed this one, I tried and failed at several other landscapes because I just didn't feel the scene as well as I did here. I guess having taken the reference photo myself made it easier because I had a better sense of the location.
This is an acrylic on canvas, 16" by 20".

Perhaps a bit run-down. Thanks very much! I so seldom work in acrylic, so I was pleased that this one turned out well.

Thank you very much! I think I must have been in the right mood when I painted this one. Landscapes are usually pretty difficult for me (because i'm not very fond of painting them), but for some reason, this one just kind of fell into place.

Thank you very much! I'm kind of proud of this one because I think even though it's acrylic, it has an oil look to it. I usually have to work too fast in acrylic, and it shows sometimes.

WattsHanna In reply to theancientofdays [2007-04-18 20:18:24 +0000 UTC]

and thats excactly the reason i like to paint with oil, as i mention in my previous comment to you....i dont need to work fast!

And I agree with you on being on the mood to do art.
I can only produce good art when I'm in the mood to draw.

You're absolutely right about needing to be in the right frame of mind. I can look at my work and tell when I was in the "zone" and when I wasn't. It's so discouraging to try to work and just not have it that day. Those are the days I cut mats.

I remember this one, and I also remember adding it to my favorites. I loved this one, and I still do! I've always had a soft spot for these old mailboxes. I've painted and drawn so many of them throughout the years, even way back in highschool. Old mailboxes and barbed wire......I don't know why I love them, but I do. Perhaps it has something to do with growing up in the country.

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-03-13 08:40:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Maybe that's part of the reason I like this one - it's kind of close to me because I was raised more or less rurally as well. I've done quite a few mailboxes, too. We really ought to do more. They're always an interesting subject.

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-03-20 14:46:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh, tell me about it! Oh my gosh, do I ever miss Birches too! They are my favorite tree. I was like a starving person when I visited Michigan for that short week after the holidays. I was drinking in as much as I could of the landscaping there. I miss it so much. I HATE the trees down here. They are so scrubby looking to me.

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-03-23 10:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's right - where you are, the trees aren't even very tall! I was amazed when I went to Maine and saw the birch forests - even in the fall, they looked like snow because they were so white. It's a beautiful sight!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-03-31 15:23:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes, they are so beautiful! Birch trees are spectacular. Another aspect that I have always loved about Birch trees is a bit of history that goes with them. I don't know if you went up close to one, but if you do you will find that the bark is very paperlike. The white bark peels off like paper, naturally. The native americans used to peel off sections of this wood and use it as paper to write things on it. The "paper" is so soft, almost soft like a fine velvet. Depending on how many layers you peel off at a time, it can be thick like cardstock or extremely delicate and thin, like tissue paper.

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-04-02 09:37:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you bet! We used to play with birch bark all the time when I was a kid. The Ojibwas where I lived made little canoes out it to sell to the tourists.

Yes, I've seen those too! It's neat isn't it? The great northern country is full of wonders! I need to find those kind of wonders down here......I'm trying desperately to try to enjoy the south.....it's proving to be hard, but I'm truly giving it my all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-04-04 05:19:07 +0000 UTC]

There are a few things I've found that I really like about the South:
1. No slush.
2. People tend to drive more courteously.
3. Being eaten by a bear is less likely.
I can't think of any more off the top of my head....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-04-10 12:16:27 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Well, those COULD be good points, but......

1.) I don't mind the slush, because if there's slush that means there's snow, and I LOVE snow!
2.) HA HA! You've never driven in Florida, have you?? It's downright dangerous down here. Between the multitude of UNcourteous people here we also have a ton of elderly people down here, making driving quite hazardous to one's health.
3.) No, no bears, but we have man-eating alligators to take the place of the bears, which attacks more frequently than the northern bears anyway!

Boy, Chris, you stink when trying to find positive things about the South! LOL! BUT I'm STILL trying to find the positive and only focus on that. Perhaps in a year it will finally replace my seeing the things I don't like.

Thanks! You're absolutely right. Most of the commissioned work I do is from photos sent to me over the internet, but I think it really makes a lot of difference to have that personal connection that you get from plein air or having been on location to shoot the subject.
