Description This is a watercolour I did of a house in New York state. I paint a few houses when people ask me to, and I thought this one turned out pretty well. I had it posted last fall, so a few of you may have seen it before. It's about 16" by 20".
Those bricks are really hard.

Thanks! The houses are pretty fun to do, and not s hard as they look. It's all mostly straight lines and just putting the right colours in the right places.

Looks like you got all the colours in the right places! You always amaze me! Jealousy doesn't become me, and I'm very rarely jealous of anything, I think it's a petty emotion, however, that being said, I'm jealous of your talent! I wish I could paint!

Hey - houses are really easy! It's all just two-point perspective and straight lines. If you get the drawing right, it's like colouring in a colouring book.

Maybe I'll try it first, still seems intimidating though!

Wow! Thank you so much! You really hit the nail on the head, as they say - that's exactly the look I was going for. I tried to accentuate the house's shape by going a little heavier on the shadows. I really appreciate it!

Thank you very much! That was a bit of a challenge because of all the brick-work, but I rather enjoyed doing the landscape.

i remember this! painting houses is hard, the textures are like one of the hardest parts

I'm glad you remembered it! I think most people forgot this one!
I don't usually find the houses too hard, but the vegetation around them is pretty trying to me because I so rarely paint trees and bushes in watercolour. The bricks on this one were pretty tough, though - I thought I was going to go crosseyed!

Wow.I agree with what some commenters has said, it looks just like a photo! The house looks so realistic..I wonder HOW in the world you'd actually painted this.Amazing work!

theancientofdays In reply to Nazzy [2007-05-12 10:11:11 +0000 UTC]

I don't think houses themselves are really very hard because they're mostly just straight lines, so as long as the perspective is right, it's just a matter of putting the right colours in the right places! Thanks very much indeed!

What's with the fire hydrant??? Gosh, that had to make parking a nightmare!

Great painting as usual, Chris, my friend!

That fireplug is very important to the homeowner. He absolutely insisted that I leave it in. I can't imagine how they maneuver their vehicles around it, but it's really there!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-05-17 11:13:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I do not doubt that it is really there. You paint things the way they really are, so I had no doubts. I wonder about the homeowner's mental stability though! Wait a minute.....this is the northeast we're talking about.....okay, it's understandable now!

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-05-18 00:48:39 +0000 UTC]

Believe me, I saw stranger things when I was in the northeast! the placement of this fireplug is positively mundane compared to some of the buildings!

theancientofdays In reply to WattsHanna [2007-05-10 09:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! I usually paint homes pretty "specifically". Well, I usually paint watercolour with a lot of detail - not many washes because they tend to bleed and mess up a painting. D:

Thank you very much! If I recall correctly, this one wasn't particularly difficult, but it took a lot of work to place the elements of the painting. and, of course, then there's the bricks... I appreciate the kind comment!

You noticed! The owner of the house was very insistent that I leave the fireplug in when I painted this one. I'm not sure whether the plug or the garage was there first, but it would certainly make for some awkward moments, I would think.

But won't that be so much more like the way we Yanks picture the Brit countryside? We all think of it as if it were one big James Herriot novel.
