Description Just a little tidbit for you guys while you wait on the (very very belated ) holiday pic. I was finishing one of the last characters last night when I was overcome by the need to fling random giant doodles all over the place (I expect you know the feeling). And, as they do occasionally, after ten minutes I found these selfsame doodles conglomerating into something serious. I drew her left eye first, and it was so ALIVE that I was totally hooked. So a huge speed-drawing (as in maybe four hours ) finished this morning.

Her name is, without a doubt, Fiora. Dunno why. She just IS. I think she might be partly based off the Fiora in Susan Fletcher's "Dragon's Milk"--one of my favorite books as a younger reader. I love Fletcher's names for dragons (Fiora, Flagra, Embyr, Pyro, Synge, Kindle, Byrn, etc). And please forgive the crap background. I wanted it done.

This is not how I usually draw dragons. But I think she's very beautiful. So, enjoy!

Wow, thank you so much! I'm really glad you like her!

It's so wonderful to hear that you've read "Dragon's Milk;" I was beginning to worry that nobody here had ever heard of it! I absolutely adored the series when I was a kid (and still do! ), but the first book was always my favorite because I loved Embyr. And Kaeldra was cool, although Lyf was kind of a brat. They just have the most unique voice and flavor--they are absolutely a joy to read, and so original! It's great to hear that you like them too!

And once again, thank you!

anytime!

i haven't read the third one yet, but sofar the first one's my favorite too. the dracling were just completely cute. Lyf was a bit of a brat, but still innocent.

The third one's pretty good--it mostly focuses on Lyf and a PACK of baby dragons. I do mean PACK. There are about a dozen, I think...huh. But I like it! And yes, the draclings were awesome. I was always fond of Byrn, too--she sort of seemed like the leader.

Thank you very much! I always like to see dragons with the more angled look of feathers than the round "fish scale" design.

Omigosh! Shez so pretty! You did a terrific job at drawing the scales and the coloring I can't draw scales, nope! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAntimonyElement In reply to TheDarkestRaven1608 [2009-01-08 18:08:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

Actually, this method of drawing scales is really very easy. It's basically a four-step method:

1. Draw your scales LIGHTLY (or in a different layer if you're using Photoshop or something)

2. Color in the "base" color--what color the scales actually are without shine or anything

3. Darken the area at the "top" of the scale where it connects to the body and is shadowed by the scale on top of it

4. Lighten (white gel pen and white-out pens work well for this) the tip of the scale where it catches the light, and add a vertical line to show the scale's shaft if you wish.

That's it! It's really extremely simple, and it looks nice. Give it a try if you want!

Okay! Thanks for the instructions It seems simple XD, yet I don't know yet

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAntimonyElement In reply to TheDarkestRaven1608 [2009-01-13 01:45:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, give it a try, and let me know what you think! You can color feathers the same way--just make the shadows less obvious, and make the shine gold or silver instead of white.

TheDarkestRaven1608 In reply to TheAntimonyElement [2009-01-13 02:15:40 +0000 UTC]

What? I could use this technique with feathers also? Omigosh! I am so excited to use this on E-Gee now!!! Thanks a bunches!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAntimonyElement In reply to TheDarkestRaven1608 [2009-01-13 02:33:32 +0000 UTC]

Certainly! I draw my scales and feathers very similarly, because I feel that dragons are closer to birds than to reptiles, and therefore scales and feathers are just different variations on the same basic structure. Ask me if you have any questions; I'd be happy to help!
