I always loved such step-by-steps. But here I have to say a bit of something. I hope this is ok. ^^ I do work with such small light sources a lot lately and it normally helps me a great deal when I mark the point where the light comes from clearly. That way I remember it easier and can add the shading in the drawing accordingly.
Especially on the lab-coat the light seems to be in front of him. The lamp could be very faint but even then the parts of his face that are turned away would get less light and more shadows than you used here. and maybe even a few highlights thanks to the light.
The bg-patterns are prefect. Give the whole drawing a feeling of a dirty garage or maybe a strange lab. =^^=
