Description Here's the muscle study of smilodon populator. I really wanted to be accurate on this study, so I actually started off drawing all the deep muscles first, then worked my way to the surface muscles. I find it interesting that smilodon had smaller masseters in order to open their mouth wider. Before I did my research I always assumed they had powerful jaws, using it to crush the necks of their prey. However, it's speculated that their jaws were weaker and smaller and teeth too delicate, so they relied on their powerful forearms to kill prey. Some even believe they jumped down from trees on top of their prey! I love doing these studies, I learn so much from the research and drawing the animal from bones, to muscles, and finally skin! Smilodon done in Prismacolor markers, white pen, and colored pencils.
