Description She rode the elevator down to the basement garage underneath the apartment tower. Armed security kept a close eye on the vehicles that were kept there, as long as they weren’t bribed to fall asleep.
As ever she would have to do her own checks of her car before even daring to open the door let alone start the engine. As she began her private ritual she could feel an obligatory burning sensation in the back of her neck, base of the spine, as always, on cue.
Other detectives throughout New York wouldn’t need to bother with this custom but Jessica was no ordinary detective. She had, at one time, been the solely privileged individual of New York’s Italian Mafias’ “Crime Lord” Don Padovan’s direct attention.

Jessica had arrested his only son and heir, Francesco, two years prior which ended up with his eventual incarceration and, ultimately, his murder in prison. Francesco had been transferred from one section of Rikers Island, where he was relatively safe amongst his associates, to another section where he was figuratively, if not literally, ripe for the picking.
Investigators into Francesco’s death could not explain whom it was that had ordered his transfer and was eventually declared an “error of administration”.

In retaliation to Francesco’s death an indiscreet declaration of vengeance against Jessica was declared when her old car prematurely exploded as she approached it. The resulting explosion had thrown her several feet through the air causing her head to slam into a wall which, subsequently, required her receiving brain surgery to relieve a sub-Dural hematoma.
She had spent 8 months recovering in a hospital bed and to this day is still receiving physiotherapy and a concoction of meds for her pain management.

The meds did nothing to alleviate the phantom burning sensation that occurred every time she checked her car over, though. This was something of which she would probably never recover from. She did, however, find solace in the fact that Padovan had passed away several months ago and all threats against her had since ceased.
Yet despite Padovan’s death, and several discussions with her superiors, she would never find herself abandoning this almost sacred ritual of tires, axels, gas tank, and under-the-hood checks.
If she ever needed reassurances regarding anything in life; this was it.

Satisfied with her checks she decided to once again take the next step.
To actually sit inside.

Jessica’s recovery from her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was an ongoing and arduous process.
She was fully capable to function as an everyday human being until she came face to face with the prospect of getting inside a car. Every time the notion arose something inside her would cause her to feel total anxiety, claustrophobia and that God awful burning sensation in the base of her neck.
As she opened her car door she felt the same sudden rush of emotions rise from deep inside her and she quickly slammed the door closed again, cutting them off before a panic attack set in.
Resting her hands on the roof of her car, Jessica could nought but sigh and feel total frustration over her PTSD. Every time she tries to get into a car, wherever or not it was hers, she would begin to suffer the same waves of emotions, without fail.

With only an hour to go before she had to report for duty she decided to do what she had been doing for what seemed far too often. To take the train to work.
As she walked her way down to the train station she received a call on her cell phone, informing her of a homicide approximately 3 blocks away from her. As she put her phone back into her pocket she changed direction toward the crime scene but not without making a small detour first.
It would only be half a block further than dispatch would expect her to travel but she wasn’t going to start her day without a hot and highly caffeinated drink inside her.

Part 1 -     -    Part 3 -

Scene created in Poser Pro 2014
Exported and rendered in Octane Standalone
Clouds were achieved using Phantom Scatter ( www.guusthissen.nl/scatter/ )

1681mb VRAM was used to process this scene with 12k samples @ 113 hours.
PMC Kernel was used with a diffuse depth of 80 and specular depth of 240.
Parallelism set to 8 (Just discovered this, increases render capacity at expense of increased VRAM)
Minor Photoshop skills were used to correct colour balancing.
FilterForge for further tweaking.

Well the reason for the major long render time was due to a couple of reasons.
One reason was due to the clouds that were produced using Phantom Scatter. The clouds enabled me to render the scene with procedurally created clouds within Octane instead of relying on Vue to create a HDRI Map. I probably could have gotten away with a HDRI Map whilst significantly reducing the render time yet I’m wanting to use Phantom Scatter to try and break away from Vue for producing scenic images and PS is being developed in such a way that it looks as if this is going to be the best possibility. If I choose not to render to such high quality imaging.

The second reason being that I used the PMC rendering kernel which requires a lot more computing power. This coupled with the detailed procedural clouds greatly increased the render time required to reach the desired 12k samples. If I had used direct lighting the render would only have taken 13 hours!

This image also features a new hair set for Jessica, Very much in the same style but with greater control, details and definition. I’ll do a proper showcase for Jessica’s new hair soon 
